Notes
a. Note:   tised at Firth and Stenness on 5th September 1841. He spent his childhood at Netherbigging farm with his parents, Thomas and Mary and his 6 siblings, Mary, Thomas, Margaret, Christina, Jessie and Robina.
  James spent his early working life on the family farm, and later became a mason.
  On 24 March 1864 in Stromness, James Clouston married farmer's daughter, Mary Lyon. Mary and James raised six children: Mary, James, John, Thomas, George and Margaret. A seventh did not survive. The Cloustons lived at Whitehall cottage in Stenness.
  James, a master mason, died of heart disease at Whitehall, Stenness on 11 September, 1894. He was 52. and he is buried with his wife Mary and many other Cloustons in the church cemetery in Stenness. The Clouston headstone is a memorial to James and Mary, their son James and his wife Jessie, and their son John who was drowned at Ohiwa in New Zealand.
