  Biography
  Thomas Clouston was the 3rd son of Robert Clouston, the miller at Boardhouse Mill, and Janet Merryman. He was born in Millhouse, Boardhouse, Birsay on 12 May 1804.
  Thomas had two older brothers, William and Robert, and two younger sisters, Ann and Margaret and he spent his early years at the Boardhouse Mill.
  Thomas's father, Robert, passed away before the birth of Thomas's youngest sister Ann. What became of the family after his death is not known, but according to family sources, Thomas was orphaned at the age of 9 and went to live with an uncle and aunt in Stromness.
  Thomas spent time in Canada in the 1820s as a whaler with the Hudson's Bay Company, and on his return, he purchased Netherbigging Farm, the ancestral property of the Clouston family.
  Thomas married his cousin Mary Clouston in Stenness, on 11 February 1832, and they had 7 children - Mary, Thomas, Margaret, James, Christina, Jessie and Robina. Sadly Mary, and their daughter, Jessie, both died of fever on 21st March 1861. At the time of the census that year, Thomas (56) then a widower, his sons Thomas (24) and James (20), and his daughters Mary (26) and Christina (15) were at Netherbigging, along with William Mackay (9). Thomas was a "Farmer Of 16 Acres".
  On July 21st the following year, Thomas remarried. His second wife was Margaret Brown, the daughter of Ann Spence and Peter Brown. Thomas and Margaret had seven children: William, Jessie, Peter, Margaret, Martha, John and Annabella. At the time of the 1871 census, Thomas (65) and Margaret (25) were living at Netherbigging farm with their children William (7), Jessie (6), Peter (4), Margaret (2), Martha (7 Mo) and Margaret Flett (16). Thomas was a "Farmer (20 Ac 14 Arable)".
  Thomas Clouston, farmer, of West Netherbigging, died on December 5th 1878, aged 74 years. He is buried in the Stenness Cemetery.
