Robert Charles was born on 18 September 1955 in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in
Victoria British Columbia. He was a very active boy, inclined to get into
mischief periodicaly. A bit of a tease at times; because of his adventureous
nature he could cause some anxious moments at times. When learning to ride his
first two wheel bike he had a spill of serious proportions which resulted in
him having a concusion and a cracked skull. This did not deter him for a
moment. His biggest and most exciting adventure was when he climbed almost to
the top of a dead tree which toppled over against another tree. In this
precareous position the tree was very unstaple each movement by Robert caused
the tree to move a bit more; if it were to slip away from the tree it was
leaning against it would have been about about a thirty foot drop which would
surely have caused some serious injury to him. The only way to get him down was
to call the Naval Fire Department, they could bring a cherry picker with along
enough reach to get him down. It was of the utmost importance that Robert not
move, while his parents stood by with the neighbors encouraging him not to move
and listening to each groan of the tree as it moved ever so slightly. The fear
that he would fall caused agony to the spectators Robert enjoyed the
excitement. After what seemed like an eternity the fire truck arived after a
few moments of appraisel the fire men picked him from his precarious position,
and put him safley on the ground. The excitement for Robert was so great he
talked about his rescue for weeks. He would have been about eight years old
then. He had many more adventureous ascapades after that. He enjoyed scouts and
especially the camping trips he had almost all of the merit badges. He was an
excelent student and excelled in math. He served a diesel mechanics
apprentice ship with Independent Diesel of Naniamo B.C. On completion he soon
had his own department to run. The company often flew him to remote areas of
B.C. to service equipment on his own he was very highly thought of by his
employer and fellow employees. He was killed on 3rd February 1980 while driving
home to Naniamo with his wife Sheryl an baby daughter Angela. It was about
9p.m. when the jeep he was driving had a flat tire and hit an icey patch
simoltainiously causeing the jeep to be flipped over. Sheryl was only slightly
injured and shooke up Angela was uninjured.
