In the 1851 census aged 29 he is a grocer and tea dealer living in Mill Brow, Churchtown, with his wife Catherine 24 working as a shop assistant, and their daughter Jemima aged 10 months. In the 1881 census Esau Howard, 58, is in Mill lane, North Meols, Lancashire, England, Mary Ann 45 is listed as a grocer's wife; the children at home are Alinda 19, Bertha 16, Eber. 13 Both girls are listed as grocers daughter, the son as a scholar. - Another son of Peter, William aged 31 in the 51 census, born about 1820 in Churchtown, took on his grandfather's trade as a tailor and had a wife Margaret. In the 1881 Census the family is living at Churchtown Street - today's Botanic Road - William is 61, as is Margaret and their children at home are son Jacob 22, tailor and Jane 20 dressmaker. Peter's fourth son was called Jacob. Among the Howard families listed in the census the sole Esau Howard is easy to find. The name would appear to be a confirmation of the move his parents made from the Anglican church to the Methodist Chapel. The movement was strong in Southport.
