Howard of North Ogden to Vernal P. Howard of Long Beach, California. The double-ring ceremony was performed at the Salt Lake L.D.S. temple December 3, with Apostle Harold B. Lee officiating. A reception at the North Ogden ward recreational hall followed the marriage. The bride chose a gown of satin with a beaded sweetheart neckline, kpointed sleeves and a bustle back. Her finger-tip veil of bride’s illusion fell from a crown of seed pearls. Her bouquet consisted of white roses centered with an orchid. She was attended by her sister, Mrs. Brown, as matron of honor, with the Misses Doris Berrett, Mary Shaw and Doris Randall as bridesmaids. All were gowned in pastel colors and carried nosegays of pink and blue chrysanthemums. Dean Andrus stood as best man. The mothers of the bride and bridegroom wore gowns of blue and fuschia, with matching corsages of pink and white camellias. The couple will be at home to their friends at 358 E. Sunset, Long Beach. Prior to her marriage the bride was entertained at a number of parties. The Misses Dorothy Walker and Shirley Cole entertained at the home of Miss Walker for coworkers of the bride. Showers were also given in her honor by Miss Doris Berrett at her home in North Ogden and by Mrs. Vern Mathie and Marie Brown, mother and sister of the bride at their home in North Ogden. howard 1510 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Long Beach Stake Long Beach 2nd ward observer Spotlights Vern Howard: Vernal Park Howard, the son of Josiah Howard and Louisa B Park was born and grew up in Carey, Idaho, where he learned at an early age the meaning and value of work. He was ambitious and a good student. At age fourteen he with his mother, two sisters and a younger brother came to California in a Model T. Ford. He graduated from Compton High School - before we had a Jordan High. He started to assume big respponsibilities in caring for the needs of the family in supplying grocery stores with produce which he purchased from wholesale markets in Los Angeles. It wasn’t long before he was managing the produce departments in many stores. During World War II, when machinists were urgently needed, he became an excellent machinist, especially in tool and dye making. He came up with many inventions which were of great value & convenience in his business and for homemakers. A lift on his truck made it much easier to load big orders of produce or other heavy objects. A clothes caddy for the home maker - so helpful for drip drying clothes, or to hang the ironed clothes on when ironing or sewing. This could be easily moved from room to room when putting clothes away. It was very useful too as an extra closet or place to hang clothes when company would come. When not in use, it could be folded small and compact for easy storage. A dolly he designed and built is still in use by members of the family. The wheels finally wore out but could be replaced. A little car he built for his children gave them many months of pleasure & many fond memories. These are but a few of the many things he was apt to in doing with tools. He has talent as an architect and builder. He drew the plans for his mother’s home on Louise & Locust. He improved on the plans building a duplex on Sunset and Elm and then a triplex on Plymouth. He then built a larger home on Bentree in Bixby Knolls and then another with still greater improvements on Woodward Lane in Garden Grove. He has six children - three boys and three girls. Two of his sons have filled honorable missions, being strong missionaries and both have graduated from B.Y.U. He is the proud grandfather of thirteen grandchildren. P.S. When his son, living in San Jose, was asked for information in the writing of this “Spotlight” he contributed the following: A Tribute to my Father: by Ronald J. Howard As I sit back & reflect on my past, it was my father who has had one of the greatest impacts on my life for good. It was Dad who taughte me how to work and enjoy it, to accept responsibility, to be creative, to work hard and long, to endure, to be motivated, to use my head, to keep a positive attitude - and the list could go on and on. I appreciate more than ever before the powerful example and motivating force my father has played in my life. I just hope I can plant the same things in the life of my son Jared. Thanks Dad for helping me to succeed in the areas where I have been successful. Your son - Ron howard 1504 I Vernal Howard the son of Josiah Howard and Louisa B Park was born January 13, 1914 in Carey Idaho. Carey Idaho is a small Mormon town. My Father was Josiah Howard he was born in Skelmersdale Lancashire England where he grew to manhood. He was 21 years old when he emigrated to America. My Mother is Louisa B Park she was born in Provo Bench Utah where she lived untill she was married My Grandfather Park was the first white boy born in My first recollections are I remember - - - before I went to school I lived in Carey Idaho I was blessed I attended grammar school in Carey untill I was blessed. (Vern’s handwriting, he didn’t write any thing else.) howard 1513 September 24, 1976 Dear Vern; First of all Vern I have to tell you, I’m on a very small budget. I just don’t make enough to attend all the dances etc. In fact by going to the San Diego Conference and to the dance where I saw you again, I so shortened myself, that I’ve had to borrow about $25.00 from my daughter to get thru’ the rest of this month. Normally I just make it. You see Vern I only get one pay day a month, so don’t expect me to attend more than one or two dances a month. Okay, now you know my financial status. Remember, I have a son on a mission too. Vern, you scare me. You’re so bitter. Certainly we’ve both had a marriage or two that has failed, but we can’t keep going back & raking up the ashes. That only stirs up bad feelings & hate. And if you hope to fall in love one day & be loved, you can’t keep putting these other women out in front & saying, “see what they did to me,” “ Expect you to be different even perfect.” You see Vern, that’s what you’re saying to me, and it scares the devil out of me. If I ever had an inclination to one day fall in love with you, I wouldn’t allow myself too, because I’m afraid I wouldn’t be perfect enough for you. When I work, I don’t keep a perfect house. I try, but my job drains me. I’m awake by 5 A.M. or 5:30, I leave for work by 7 A.M. & sometimes I’m not home until 7 P.M. If I’m not in bed by 10 P.M. I drag the next day, so you see I have very little time to run my home like I would like to. When I don’t have to work I love keeping house & to decorate etc. but if you plan to come see me, please don’t judge me on my house, or you might as well forget me now. I’m not a phony & I’m not going to kill myself to get it immaculate just to make you think I keep it that way all the time even while I’m working. If you care for me even a little bit with a possibility of caring a lot one day, then you might as well know now, I;m not perfect, Also, Saturday is the only day I can sleep & try to regain a little strenght for the coming week. I can’t possibly be ready before 10:30 A.M. If that’s too lathe, then I guess I won’t be able to go with you. Forgive me Vern if I’m not the way you’d like me to be, but I’ve fought a long hard battle with life and I must be myself. When I do fall really in love, then I will be willing to bend in any direction my man wants me to, but since neither of us are ready for real love, a giving love yet, then if we see each other, we have to just be ourselves. So, maybe you won’t want to see me. You’ll have to decide that for yourself. I want you to know I loke you, and I’d like to go out with you, that is if you let me be myself, & you want to after you read this letter. I guess I sort of spouted off too, but Vern, for some reason I don’t understand the men that are drawn to me want me to be perfect & when they find I’m just a normal woman, they try to change me into something they can put on a pedestal & look at. So I guess I’m getting a little defensive myself. I just want to be me, & hopefully one day a man will love me that way. I have a lot of love to give, so he will have to be a man filled with love. That’s all I want from my special man, just lots of love. Oh; I guess I’m spouted enough. I’d better close before I say anymore, as I’ve probably said to much already, Love, Rosetta Rosetta McCarter 34050 Mariposa Ucaipa, California 92399 howard 1509 Name Sex Birth Date Death Date Birth Place Death Place SSN Mother Maiden Name Father HOWARD, VERNAL PARK MALE 01/13/1914 01/06/1993 IDAHO LOS ANGELES 558262349 PARK, United States Census, 1940 California Los Angeles Long Beach judicial Towns Councilmanic District 9 59-139 Long Beach Judicia...) in Assembly District 70 Image 42 of 52 Poppy 1431 158 O 1000 Howard Louisa Head 0 F W 56 Wd no 8 8 Utah 94 same house 20 20 yes 3 12 nursing private p4 760 86 1 6 260 55 Vernal P son 2 m W 26 S no 14 30 Idaho same house yes 1 40 clerking grocery p5 220 61 1 50 1500 240 Verda daughter 2 F W 22 SH H 30 Utah 94 same house no no yes 52 musician newwoolier no 6 0 0 yes Melvin son 2 ma W 19 S 4 14 20 Idaho 89 same house no no no 3 6 0 0 n Letter written by Vern Howard to Virginia and Ira Coulson 1/22/86 Dear Virginia & Ira It was so good getting your letter you shre have a talent for writing and your letters are so interesting its sure the next best thing to seeing you. I sure enjoyed hearing Ira’s talk at Shirley’s funeral on the tape even if it was only about 1/2 way through the tape ran out. You sure have a gift Ira. There has been some talk about getting rent control here So I got a good article and I think I’ve convinced Leona and LeRoy that we are being very foolish not raising mothers Home to somewhere its true value. It hasn’t been raised in 3 years while comparable rents have all been going up each year. Mothers would rent from 450. to 500. Its been at 300. I get 390 each on triplex & 390 on the little home at 74-E 55. Verday always says she has a heart but she carries it too far. Social security payments go up each year to cover inflation. In the last 3 years mine has gone up 102.00 per month due to inflation. I quit talking to Verda about 1 year ago because she just wouldn’t listen to reason & it just wasn’t good to have bad feelings but its not good to get locked into rents that are so far under prevailing rents because under rent control they can only go up a small percentage each year. LA it was 7% each year. How is pretty little Mary now? I’ll never forget what a beautiful talented girl she was. Jared, Rons oldest boy sure has a talent for piano they mail me tapes of their family home evenings & he sure plays beautiful and its so good hearing them all sing & play. Even Ron is improving on his singing He sure has a good Family & those twins are so much fun. Are you still planning on building on your acre? When are you going to come here for a vacation or better still move back? They say Salt Lake City is growing are you getting any new industries. Please write, Love you Vern howard 1613 Letter written by Vern Howard to Virginia and Ira Coulson Rev. Thompson is one tough guy He says before he’s ready to die, He’ll have some history into my head. If it takes a crowbar to made outa lead. I don’t five a dam if he does say so I know more history than he thinks I know. I know the Greeks eat blueberry pie and the Assyrians were hell for telling a lie. what did the Romans do. Oh! Gee I know they sailed across the sea I dknow they sailed to Carthage town And the Carthageans fought if they did go down He says German laws were all the bunk Attila was nothing but a dirty skunk. He says Aloric was very brave But in spit of hell he met his grave He says that where the Huns had trod. There was no grass left on the sod. and more than that he says two thirds of all the Huns were crazy birds. Rev. Thompson is nothing but a long eared ass he ow, he ow clear through the class he reminds me greatly of a know on a log I got more respect for a damed ole dog !!! I wrote this poem about my history or ancient history teacher Mr. Thompson He is a young man dark complected but truly not a bit good looking and he always tries to have some fun some way or another he tells jokes about us kids so we do it about him and he gets angry and he aint a bit scared to kick you or hit you we sure have some fun with him and boy he gets angry at me sometimes once he told us that we could not sit with one or another but I went and sit with John a minute to speak to him and he came up there kind quiet and grabbed me pulling me out of the desk so I got out in a hurry and started for my desk and he kicked at me and missed me so I turned around and grabbed his foot and he almost fell down so I let go quickly and went to my desk and he came and just shoved me a little. But believe me I am not that way with woodard or Evans. Mrs. Evants I don’t know whether its much good but I thought it might cheer you up and help you to digest your thanksgiving dinner a bit. He likes to talk to the girls and have the girls like him so he has Birtha Patterson and a lot of other girls his pets in History. He gives them good grades in tests etc. I have been taking Woodworks and like it all right but Mr Beck our teacher in it quit teaching the 7th and 8th and went to some other place to be a teacher in High School so I had to quit taking it. Mr Woodard is a number (a) teacher he teaches me algebra and General Science and he sure is good. Mrs Evans teaches me English and she knows quite a lot about it but I sure hate it and I always did. I am just taking my Six weeks Exams. I got 89 in Algebra it is pretty near 90 so I almost came calling it 90 so it would sound better but I thought I hadn’t better. General Science is sure interesting and I can’t hardly tell you any thing about it because it would take me all day. But come to think about it you already know about it alreadhy. I always tell Mama about what I learn. It is very cold here at night and for the last few days it has been warm at day and it is good skateing on the lake now so I am going next Saturday I hardly have time after school because of the damed chores I guss I hadn’t ought to off said that but that is what it is - I’ll bet Dean is sure getting big and brighter every day. I sure would like to see him. He sure got to likeing me when he was here but I guess he has forgot all about me now. He are still figuring on going to Pocky on thanksgiving and sure wish you could be there but I guess I hadn’t better tell you what we will have and the good time we will have because you might start crying Ha! Ha! I sure hope it will stay good weather like the past 3 days so we can go. We sold your cow and my red cow for 80.00 apiece $160 for both to Milford Sparks He sure is a jew, and I sure hated to seen them sold. Mother sold them while I was at school I don’t believe I would of sold them if I was her. Well I am quite tight on paper and anyway I have written 4 sheets counting front and back and the poem that helped out. So good by and I hope you have a good thanksgiving. Vernal Howard howard 1629
