Dear Brother: Your letter of the 1st Ultimo is at hand, or rather came to hand in due season, but through an over-sight was laid away before it was answered, which I hope you will excuse. I was ordained by President George Q. Cannon to the Apostleship, and he was ordained by President Brigham Young, who was ordained by the three witnesses to the Book of Mormon, who were ordained under the hand of the Prophet Joseph Smith, and he was ordained under the hands of Peter, James, and John. This I believe is the information which you desired to obtain, and this will also be the line through which you have received the Priesthood. Died of February 26 buried 29 1956 at Merced California howard 1557 The story of the life of my Great Grandfather, my grandfather and my father on my fathers side as told by my father Josiah Howard. Copied by Leona Howard Andrus. My grandfather on my fathers side was William Howard the son of William Howard. He (great grandfather) married Jane Bond from Scarisbrick near Southport Lancashire England they had two sons James and William. My grandfather was accidentally killed when my father William was only six years old. He fell from a heavy cart the farmers used to haul big loads on like we use a wagon for. They had two wheels. No one saw how it happened he somehow fell and broke his neck. James worked on the farm and they took William (my father) to his uncles, he worked for them leading the horse to plow they used one horse to plow and to haul and would have a boy to lead the horse. Grandmother rented the farm and she worked out. She married Peter Sutch and raised three sons Peter, John and Robert. When my father was twelve years old his step father stole him from his uncle by showing him a lot of money and enticed him to get through a hole in a thorn fence. My father once showed me the fence and how he was enticed away thinking he would give him some money. Then he told him that his mother wanted to see him, so father wanted to go back and tell his uncle but his step father said no and he wouldn't give him the money if he did and he promised to let him go back after he had seen his mother. But instead he got him and James a job working in the coal mines. Six weeks was all the schooling he got. And poor grandmother found to her sorrow she had married to a drunkard. He used to take his wages and the boys and sit in the saloons until it was all gone. One time he stole a side of bacon from home and took it to the saloon. When father got home from work and they missed the flitch of bacon, that’s what they called it there, he went to the inn and as soon as he got inside he saw the bacon hanging from the ceiling, it made him so angry, there were a lot of glass tumblers, being washed in a row. He grabbed one and threw at the rest and knocked a lot of them over and broke them and then told the saloon keeper what his stepfather had done. So they fired him out. They told him he would pay for the glasses. He said yes I will when you pay for that bacon he stole from us at home. We are without food and he has spent all our wages too. The farm and everything went. William, my father, married Elizabeth Pendleton the daughter of James Pendleton and Jane Norcross. When I first remember of my fathers work he was an engineer hoisting with large steam engine at the coal mine. Then he left that and went to contracting sinking shafts and driving tunnels on contract work. My grandfather Pendleton was a basket weaver. They made baskets to carry and haul coal from the mines. They were made out of birch or willow. He died when I was young so I don’t remember him much. My father and mother had sixteen children. Seven sons and nine girls. There are two living I am the second child, the oldest died when ten years old with scarlet fever the other died young with bronchitis except Anna who married E. Wilde and died with a child birth in Carey Idaho. My father and mother were staunch members of the Wesleyan Methodist church and I was christened in that church when I was three weeks old. The minister put a few drops of water on my forehead from his fingers after dipping them in water and called it baptized and gave us a name. When I was three years old I started to go to school with my older brother. I can remember yet the school and the teacher and the holes dug around the place, but not the lessons we had. When I was fourteen I started to work. Old Peter Sutch got me my first job in the mine. My parents had eight houses they rented. Then they bought two more, one was a store building so they, mother and the girls ran the store, I preferred mining. When I was fifteen years old some Elders called at the store, gave mother some tracts and had a conversation with her on the gospel she invited them to call some evening when father was home and maybe they could chat a little. My mother had a good education for those times and taught father to read and write some. He soon could read good and had a good memory. He could tell the cubic ft. In a tunnel before I would get started to figure and was well posted on scripture and gave the elders some hard questions. I saw them in an argument and was so interested I missed going out to play with my chums until after bed time. Father was beat and on his own points too. Of course the elder was well informed and experienced and about through with his mission and ready to go home. My mothers mother Jane Norcross lived with us until her death I was about sixteen. She heard the arguments at night and was the first one to join the church so was about eighty when she died. I heard her say to my mother “I won’t live to go to Zion but you may and I hope you will do the temple work for me and pa. What can be done (which we did by the time we had been in Utah a year). I well remember the first meeting we went to after being baptized, it was in a cottage among the saints. Father and mother stood up, father talked, when they got through a man stood up and pointed his finger at them and prophesied that they would live to go to the land of Zion and (to mother) you will become a mother in Zion. They had no thought of ever leaving there for they were well fixed financially, good homes and they had one room they called the elders room fixed for them when they came along. It was not long until father began to inquire about America and Utah. What kind of a country, its resources. He finally got a good man he knew well to take care of the property and we all and two cousins came west to Salt Lake City. The man who baptized us knew the Alstons, gave us the address at coalville. He was the county clerk so he got Robert and I a job. Robert was the son of James (Fathers brother) and Jane Johnstone. He and George his brother came to America with us after their parents death. After we got work in Coalville the folks all came there where we worked and lived four years. While living there my youngest brother Elmo was born. My mother was forty four years old. We then went to Carey Idaho. My father was a high priest and died in Carey Idaho Oct. 14, 1913. My mother died Jan 31, 1930. In 1890 my father went back to England to sell his property but the value had gone down and mines not working good so he lost a lot of money on the sale but got what he could and came back to Coalville.
