Protest letter written by Virginia Coulson date unknown but the comic books as I remember were for Brian Coulson and one of his expected visits he could have been about 9 or 10. The problem with prayers at graduation was right around 1993. To my knowledge she never did anything with the letter beyond writing it. JLCO
The A.C.L.U. is out to ruin this country
It seems to me if there is anything dirty or of ill report that is O.K. this High School graduation prayer battle that is going on is so ridiculous. When can a sincere prayer be offending. The only ones that could possibly be offended is someone that is so self centered, one that has never known sorrow, just a fault finder or trouble maker. Now why should they be the only ones to be considered. A sincere prayer in any religion is a comfort to all good people.
My brothers High School graduation exercises was such a sad one. It was during world war II and we all knew they would be fighting for our country. The prayer that was given wasn’t in our religion but it was a sincere good prayer that brought comfort to us. He was killed in the war. He was a flight engineer and the plane was shot down with only one able to get off. When they were shipped home they had to be buried together in Saint Louis Mo. My mother and I went back for the funeral. A rabbi, A priest, and a protestant minister all gave prayers and none of them were offending even if my religion wasn’t represented. They were sincere good prayers and were such a comfort to us.
Now on the dirty side of things. I went in the library to get books for my grandson to enjoy. He liked comic books so I just picked up a bunch. When I got home I just happened to look at the one book on top and it was a real shock to me to find a pornographic one so I went right back to the library and showed the lady the book. She said those books were kept under lock and key where children wouldn’t have access to them but the A.C.L.U. said they were taking liberties away from the people and they had to put them out so anyone even children could have access to them. Now are all the good people in all religions going to let them absolutely ruin our country or are we going to stand up for our rights to have a morally clean nation? One where children can have prayer at their graduation and be protected from obscene material that promote crime and make our nation not a fit place to live in. Lets all go against A.C.L.U. and have a clean country to enjoy.

History written by Virginia Howard Coulson
My father, Josiah Howard, received his education in England. Joined the church along with his parents & brothers & sisters then came to America & settled in Carey Idaho. My mother, Louisa B Park received her education in Salt Lake City being one of the first Medical Doctors majoring in Obstetrics. Her brother Albert & his wife from Provo Bench settled in Carey Idaho on a farm & mother delivered their children. It was in Carey where my mother met my father & they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. My father had built a nice home on a forty acre farm in Carey & that is where I was born. Mother had six children, three boys & three girls
Carey was a farming community & everyone needed a well. My father had a well drilling outfit that dug wells. Mother was the Doctor in the community delivering many babies along with other medical needs.
My first grade teacher when she entered the classroom said. “My name is Miss Lilly can you all remember that?” and I have never been able to forget her or her name. My third grade teacher was on a mission to Japan where my grandson, Joseph is on his mission now & if we did something like getting a piece of paper on the floor he would punish us Japanese style by having us hold that piece of paper up in the air over our heads. If we talked we would have to go to the blackboard hold up one foot in back of us with our forehead on the blackboard so he had a very orderly class.
My folks bought a little blue bicycle for me & I would ride it to my music teachers home so that was my start in music. She was a good teacher. She put on recitals and as soon as I was good enough I started playing in church. My Father loved to sing and he did have a beautiful voice I’ll never forget when he offered me a quarter to learn, “Truth Reflects Upon the Senses.” He also had some words to that song that he had learned in England - “Life is like a Mountain Railroad.”
Carey was a fun little town I remember one time they had a trip around the world and in the different homes they would represent different countries. Mother’s brother William had been on a mission to Samoa so the island had to be at our home. The front room had the floor protected someway, the furniture taken out and dirt & flowers fixed in it to look like they were growing. In one corner was a little hut like they have in Samoa and my mother’s two younger sisters, Uella & Vetris sat in that hut & with their beautiful voices sang Samoan songs that their brother had taught them and as people would go from one home to another they would receive food and entertainment. When I think of one home with an Eskimo igloo made of snow blocks or something that looked like cold show that the Eskimo was setting in, well it still makes me shiver.
We had a hot springs in that town and that is where my father baptized me and we also went swimming there but with children the creeks were fun to.
I stayed with my oldest brother & family in Pocatello for high school & a good start at the University, even kept up with music lessons, worked awhile at a cheese factory & couldn’t stand cheese for years after also worked at a Five and Dime store and had a very dear girl friend & fun boy friends so life was great but it didn’t stay great. Things went from bad to worse in Carey. My folks mortgaged their home and farm for water to irrigate the farm but they didn’t get water & the Carey Bank failed so lost the home & farm. It was a very unfair deal. I was picked up at my brothers home in a Ford touring car with a trailer attached & off we went to Long Beach California where my oldest sister & husband lived. That was the year of the Great Depression. Those years were very hard years. Work was not available. They had such things going like Dance Marathons where dancers would dance until they dropped and the couple that lasted the longest would win the prize. They would rest for fifteen minutes ever so often around the clock. I always enjoyed dancing so I joined (see the picture in the Family News for November 15th, 1995 on page 5. But my partner didn’t last nor the next one either or the next & believe me when that deal was over I slept the clock around. So the search began. *I did find that if I worked in the office of a Beauty School that it would pay for the course so took the Beauty course passed the State Exam and started work in a Beauty Shop. *I decided to take a beauty course so I worked part time in the office to pay for it, took the state exam in Los Angeles and passed it so I worked in the Beauty Shop in the day & in a food place at night where you could serve food to people in cars. I saved the money to get back in school but then the earthquake came while I was working in the beauty shop. Long Beach was a disaster. Sides of buildings fell and many buildings just crumbled. People panicked but I thought the world had come to an end so might as well be calm about it. Busses quit running so I had a good nine mile walk home. Thank goodness our home wasn’t destroyed just dishes & breakable things. We could even sleep in our beds if you didn’t mind it shaking a bit all through the night. So many slept in parks. Many schools were torn down & rebuilt. The University finally opened and I was able to go to it again and majored in accounting. Long Beach did recover and I did get to go dancing again but not in any marathon just a good old fashioned dance and we even had them in our ward cultural hall with a good live orchestra. We also had musical programs each month with home talent one month and professional another and that practice continued.
My sister, husband and family moved to Pomona California and since one of my boy friends in Idaho came to see me he took me to Pomona to see them. My sister had invited the missionaries to dinner and it was there that I met Elder Coulson. In his history he tells about our writing letters and our romance that according to my mother was too fast. Well they even complemented the Bishop in my ward since I had been going with his son when the news came to the ward that I was getting married. Usually fast marriages don’t last but this coming November 16th will be our 64th anniversary.
When I went back to school I went into accounting, that was the field for me except when my children were little I wanted to be with them so taught piano lessons at home. Then when they were in school I went to work. Worked fourteen years for Freed Finance Company and that was when Lee was so ill but being my own boss I could leave and go see him. They owned finance companies, a Dance hall & the Lagoon and finally decided it was too many companies so closed the Finance Companies, then the Dance Hall - the Lagoon was enough for them so I went to work for the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Welfare Fund had my own office & plenty of interesting work to keep me plenty busy until ten years ago when Ira finally talked me into retiring to hard labor but I enjoy the garden, fruit trees and all the work that goes along with it. It is very demanding though and in summer it is more than a full time job.
*Going into music paid off - I not only enjoyed it but taught music lessons to help pay for our first home when our children were little and I am organist at church so appreciated my mother seeing to it that I practiced. The with accounting I worked first in an accounting office then Freed Finance Co. for thirteen years. Then the Jewish Community Center & Welfare Fund for thirty years and flunked retirement.
At church I am still organist. It’s a lifetime job except a few times along with being organist I have been coordinator in the Jr. Sunday School and since it has always been hard for me to give talks I decided to have each child bear their testimony and finally succeeded in getting them all to do that. When they were in Sacrament meeting that continued and the Bishop would turn the first part of the meeting over to the children. It was such a good experience for them just wish it continued in our ward. I have been a teacher also but organist is still it and the challenge with it is getting use to the different organs. First a piano then a peddle organ. Then I took lessons on the pipe organ and loved it. So in the different wards it would be pipe or Hammond or Rogers and now it is Allen and I am getting use to it. The rest of my story is pretty well covered in Ira’s history.

 Dearest Sis:
I just got back from Provo, from Elmo’s graveside service. There were more there than I expected. Vila & Betty, Shirley & Stacy, Jim L. & Sandy & their little boy. Lee howard and Wife and Gary Howard and Arella from Idaho. She is Leah Dilworth’s daughter. I thought Ira did really well. He talked about Elmo saying what a good heart he had and then dedicated the grave. It was nice and sunny to & that was good, because we have had some really snowy weather up here.
Vetris does have a head stone, I wasn’t sure of that until I saw it. They said that you or someone in California thought of a double one but they would have to dig vetris’s headstone up and it is set in cement. Arvilla thought that pictures of each would be nice on a double one, I didn’t know they even put pictures on them but found out they do. I wonder about the double because - well they weren’t like Albert & Ruth. Those there picked out the one with the Salt Lake Temple on it because they thought that is where they were married. They did tell Ira that the double one would cost 488.00 and the pictures would be 60.00 or 70.00 more now I don’t know if that was for both or each. I guess you will be hearing from the mortuary on it.
Gary said it worked out really nice for him - it was between classes. Vila isn’t too well. She walks with a limp since she broke her leg a year or so ago. Billy and Murland are in Texas and will be there for a month. Lorna & Joy couldn’t make it with children in school and then Joy’s youngest had croup and she had to keep him in. LaVern is going to try but she was working. I called LaRue but she didn’t make it either.
I guess I called a couple of dozens time to get Lee Howard but finally got him. I called Veeda Cox to but she didn’t make it. I didn’t even know about her - but we had quite a little talk on the phone.
I’m at work and I guess I better get back to it. I’m afraid I haven’t accomplished much today - but I’m in pretty good shape here now. January is a hard month with all the W-2’s Qtrly’s and financial reports but I have just one more to do for Welfare and then I should have all that out of the way and then I’ll let my helper come in again and I’ll get some of my work at home done. Ira is enjoying school and it’s good to learn new things especially since we are planning on building.
I called Ira to see if I was right on the things I said regarding price so changed to the figures he said. To put their pictures on, does Elmo and Vetris have pictures of when they were younger like when they were married. I think the only one I have is a kodak and I’m quit sure it has others in it.
Now I better wish Terry a Very Happy Birthday and tell you both that we love you and we hope all is going well there. Then I better get to work and write more later I might just get Terry another happy Birthday Wish to, later on, since it isn’t February yet.
 Love you Your sis Va.
I’m curious, did they open the casket there for the viewing? Elmo had such strong feelings on some things.

 Our very Dear L. & M.
You have one excited mother-you should see our home and what I’m having done to it to have a place for everything and everything in its place in other words get organized. Ira has the west bedroom just the way he likes it with his clothes in there and he uses the closest bath room to it.
I have the East bedroom and the bath by it which has the tub that has the things that really relaxes me & he doze not think with his arthritis problems he could get out of. In the kitchen we are eating in it. We did not want to before because it would mess up the rug if we dropped anything on it but we have had tile put under. of the wonderful world of tile had a big tile sale going on so our home is having the lineolium replaced with tile. It is so easy to clean & keep clean and the family room is larger with the table out of it for Family Home Evening which we will have tonight & believe me we will have one surprized family.
It was much easier to get ready for church yesterday with everything in its place & a place for everything. It does have its problems because things have to be torn up to get fixed up but when all finished you will have to see it. Ira wants me to slow down when I want to speed up.
Love you loads-have a beautiful day & Jordan River Temple is closed now ...

a tribute written by Joyce Otterstrom
 Dear Mum;
Just to show you I learned something whle I was in England. The English people don’t refer to their mum’s as mom they call them Mum so I thought you might like being called mum for a change.
I am writing you this letter because this mother’s day I want to thank you for being the kind of mum you are.
First of all way back a long time ago when you used to leave us children alone once and awhle. You always asked us before you left if you could bank on us. Thank you for believing us and having confidence in us. Not that you always could but eventually I think we all managed to come up to your expectations.
Thank you for loving me enough to get upset at me when I was wrong.
Thank you for the gift of the gospel and the example you set by always doing your calling. My earliest memories of church was when you wore your black dress and stood in front of the Sunday school and taught us songs and taught all the children to bear our testimonies.
Thanks for teaching me songs. I remember the two of us in the car driving somewhere and you were singing “In the Leafy treetops” I have always liked that song.
Thank you for teaching me how to read and write. Reading has always been one of my favorite things to do, especially when it is late at night and I should be sleeping.
Thank you for loving Lee so much and taking such good care of him when he was sick. It gave me more security than anything else you did. Because I knew if I needed you like he did you would be there for me too.
Thank you for paying for my college education. I might not have kept trying if you hadn’t of kept paying my tuition. Even after I failed you never blamed me you just encouraged me to try again. I knew that my education was more important to you than your money. I learned how to research and find answers at college and that has made a profound difference in my life.
This may seem odd but thank you for not being perfect. I’m not perfect either. I learned something far more important I learned that God really does use imperfect people to bring about great good. It gave me hope that if I did my best as you did that things would turn out well. Thanks for teaching me that my best was something to be proud of.
Thanks for providing me with such wonderful instruments to play. They along with my family have always been my best friends and thank you for telling everyone you knew that I played so I would get a chance to learn how to perform and teach.
Thanks for giving me a safe place to go (home) when others thought I wasn’t worth the bother of teaching, or that I wasn’t worthy of an award, or that I wasn’t worth spending time with. You always taught me, you believed I was worthy, and you spent time with me. And that made all the difference.
Thanks, the world would be a great place if all mothers were like you.
Thanks too for getting me the world’s best papa.
 Love Joy

  Virginia Elizabeth Howard Coulson
Virginia Elizabeth Howard Coulson 1910 ~ 2007 Virginia Elizabeth Howard Coulson, age 97, passes away peacefully on June 12, 2007 in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.  It was always pleasing to see and be around Virginia. One of her many gifts to those around her was her example of dedication, as in her work where she never quit until the books balanced to the penny. The memory of Virginia will always be good.
