History of William Howard III 1835-1903 William Howard III was born in Scarisbrick, North Meols, Lancashire, England parish, Lancashire England the 21st August 1835. He was the second son and second child born to William Howard II and Jenny Bond. His older brother James was born the 19 August 1832 in Scarisbrick and his younger brother Thomas was born 3 July 1836 in Rainford. William never really knew Thomas who died at the age of about 1 and was buried in North Meols, Lancashire, England 8 Jan. 1838. When William was 2 years old his father died in Rainford and was buried in North Meols, Lancashire, England the 11 Nov. 1836 at the young age of 27. His mother, being a young widow with two small children to care for, married soon after his father's death. (Sometime between his death and 11 Mar. 1837.) William's new step-father was Peter Sutch. Peter Sutch was a heavy drinker and often threatened to kill the children when in such a state. One day when he came home drunk he screamed he was going to kill William so his mother grabbed him up in her apron and ran through the fields to leave William with his grandmother as she feared greatly for his life. William lived with his grandmother, the widow Margaret Howard, at Brown Edge until at the age of 6 his grandmother was taken from him. She died 26 Feb. 1842 at the age of 71. Her estate now had to be sold and William was boarded out on an estate where he was mistreated and unhappy. At about the age of 8 he could stand no more so he slipped under a hedge and ran away. He hired out as a servant and street sweeper until he was old enough to work in the mines. In Skelmersdale William met and married Elizabeth Pendleton of Rainford on the 12 May 1863 in the Skelmersdale Chapel. To this union were born 16 children in Skelmersdale. Sadness also came to the home with the deaths of six of those children; James Henry age 10, William age 10 months, Lilly age 3 months, Walter age 10 months, Welhelmina age 10 months, and one child stillborn. In 1874 William's mother, Jenny Bond Howard Sutch, died the 23 Nov. at the age of 67 in Skelmersdale. Her son Robert Sutch was with her when she died. After her death, William's step-father, Peter Sutch, wanted to live with William and his family but William would not allow him to stay in his house and set a bad example for his children. He did allow him to stay in a small house on his place and took care of him until he died. In 1882 the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints came into their home. Imagine the joy of this couple when they learned the gospel and that they would some day have the joy of raising all those children taken from them at such a tender age. They joined the church 29 May 1882 at Southport, and emigrated to the United States 6 years later in 1888 on the ship "Wisconsin." Here is a song sung on that ship. (not there)
 Howard # 79
History from Leah D. - on back of copy of Bible Record: William Howard & Elizabeth Pendleton Howard were baptized 29 May 1882 by (1) William Jones (2) Thomas Carr. They were confirmed at Southport, Lanc. England. We have a record somewhere that three of the children were baptized the same day at Wigan, Lanc. Eng. & confirmed at Upholland, by William R. Jones, William Waterson & William Davidson. They left England by boat from Liverpool, Eng. on 15 Sep 1888. They were with the William G. Phelps Company on the ship "Wisconson." There were 145 saints on the ship. They could have traveled first class on another boat but felt impressed to stay with the saints. They landed in New York 25 Sep 1888. Traveled by train to Salt Lake City arriving 2 Oct. 1888. He became the Engineer for the mine in Coalville, Summit, Utah, USA. Their 17th child was born here. Then Elizabeth's health failed & his became fairly poor too, so they moved to Carey, Idaho in Aug 1890. He received his Citizenship papers 23 Oct 1894 in Gooding, Idaho. His patriarcal Blessing from Thomas Ball 1892, & Elizabeth's also. He was so fully converted that he believed all men in the Church were honest and trustworthy. That if they were converted to the True Church they should be conforming to it's teachings and be like unto Christ. So when he sold his holdings in England he came over with a good deal of money. His Bishop offered to take care of it for him or borrowed it from him. When they got to Carey they didn't have very much left to live on. And the going got pretty tough for them. He wrote to that Bishop & asked for him to repay him. He didn't demand it all at once, just a bit at a time to help them out. The bishop wrote back saying he was taking out bankruptsy and wasn't going to be able to pay him anything. He was sorry. Grandfather was heart sick, but he told his family, "I am glad it is him not me that had dealt so harshly with us." None of the next generation ever knew who that Bishop was or if he was ever dealt with by the Church.
