(Summit Co Bk 1 p 32) died sunday January 4. 1943 buried January 5 (hand written note) Earlier settler of Carey passes Carey January 7--Mrs Ruth Howard Eldredge, 72, wife of Forest Eldredge, died at her home in Carey after several years illness. Mrs Eldridge was born June 5, 1869 in Shelmersdale, Lancashire, England. She joined the L.D.S. church in 1882 and came to Salt Lake City in September of 1888. She was married to Forest Eldredge on September 27, 1889 in the Logan temple. In 1892 she moved with her husband to Carey where they settled on a homestead, being one of the earliest settlers in the valley. She lived here while her husband returned to Utah to work in the mines. There were no stores and flour from which she made the bread for the family was ground in a coffee mill. Her husband served two years in Australia as an L.D.S. missionary and while he was away she worked to keep herself and two children. Mrs. Eldredge suffered the fracture of several ribs in an accident and later her speech was lost permanently. She was only able to communicate with people by writing. For the last two years she has been paralyzed and consequently unable to communicate with anyone in any way. She is survived by four children, Forest Eldredge, Jr., Worthington Eldredge, Oliver Eldredge and Horace Eldredge, all of Carey. Four children preceded her in death. Also surviving are nine brothers and sisters, Josiah Howard, Jennie Phippen, Aurhur Howard, John Howard, and Mariam Dilworth, Carey, and Elmo Howard, Long Beach, California; Ada Harris, Shoshone, Mrs Maud Ainsworth, Twin Falls, and Mrs Bertha Waver, Merced, Carlifornia Five brothers and sisters are buried in England. One sister, Mrs. Anne Wilde is buried in Carey, she had 23 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services are awaiting the arrival of relatives from California. IGI Howard 138
