  Dear Sweetheart
I really believe those beautiful dreams will soon come true if all goes well, I kinda felt sure Darling that you would some day admit that you love me but sometimes when everything seemed to go wrong I would get discouraged and sometimes a little skeptical but I don’t think I’ll ever get that way anymore.
I had some time getting this most precious letter of yours but I am certainly well paid for all my trouble, “Glad,” that don’t start to tell my feelings in fact there are no words that can do that but if I was there I think I could give you some idea. I don’t think a dozen coat collars would have hid my smiles.
If the last reports are true I may be with you in a few weeks then we will both be contented. I wish you would go back to Carey and stay with Mother and Bertha until I come.
I have a lot of friends in this ward they all know me and as soon as I came in with your letter they started teasing me but they all have a wife or sweetheart waiting for them so we can all be more confidential.
One of my Friends Mr. Gristis from Cal. wants to write to you so I told him I thought it would be alright. I hope you don’t care, he is a real nice young man and has a nice looking little wife, it would take too long to tell how we got so well acquainted but I’ll tell you all about my experience in the hospital when I come home (its greats?) but since we made a howl its been better.
I think I will go back to my Co. in the morning but I don’t care much if I never do.
I will be glad when this army life is ended and I can have some freedom without stealing it. I sometimes feel tempted to steal off and come to you. Wish I was there to carry the water for you.
I really never was homesick in my life before but I am now can you blame me? I long to see you Dearest and to hear you say that you love me and another good-night kiss.
Thank God this awful war has ended and the terrible bloodshed has ceased (for a while at least) and every day now brings me nearer to you instead of the horrible screms of the battlefield which I expected.
Your prayers thus far have have been answered and I feel sure that I will soon return safe I’m sure I will have no “moral injuries” anyway.
Well Sweetheart, I must close for this time tho I have not told you half of what I wanted to the boys keep shaking my bed and the nurse has started taking our temperatures.
 Good-bye for now.
 Forever Yours

 424 E. Plymouth St. Long Beach 5, California November 7, 1958
 Dear folks, all of you;
Glad to hear from you several days ago, Should have answered sooner but for a slow old wart like me this is doing pretty good.
Now about the books, I have two Masterpieces of L.D.S. Leaders and have read one nearly thru, and it is wonderful, am going to send one to my sister Mirriam for Christmas and would suggest you use that extra copy as a gift to some friend or relative.
How stupid of me to not tell you where I got the books, it was at a drug store across the street (cat-ewampas) from the north-east corner of Temple square which would be the North East corner of North Temple and Main, However the sale will no doubt be over now, I got quite a few books there but they said that two more four dollar books were to be released the next day for the dollar sale, He did not say what books it would be, it may be some that I already have so don’t feel bad if you did miss it. I doubt if I will ever have a chance to read all the books I now have.
We hardly get a chance to eat a meal here, It seems like the bishopric can’t think of anyone but me when they want any type of welfare work done, anything from cleaning sewer lines to baby sitting. Wouldn’t mind the baby sitting if the baby was twenty or over and good looking.
We drove down to vista yesterday to seeif we could buy a lot but land is about as high there as here and the smog was just as bad. We want to get a place where I can build to suit us and also where it will be quiet and I need more room for a garden and work shop. We are thinking about trying Arizona, I think anywhere within 75 miles of any other temple would be more convenient than this, and anywhere except a battlefield would be more peaceful and quiet.
Well, I must cut my silly gab short and leave Vetris room to put in her ten cents worth, but want to say I sure enjoyed the time we spent with you and as for how to spend that money, well, why not buy a couple of cases of corn, peas, corned beef or a package of chewing gum or any other good food and store it away under the carpet? Surely you can find some use for it.
Lots of love to all Uncle.
(Vetris) Saturday morn. Now I’ll spoil unkies letter. Just talked to Sis she feels better now & wants to know if you recieved cookies? you cannot stop her from doing things. She loves to & its part of her life & nice to have some things to do & feel needed maybe I’ll advise her to get a trailor house then she won’t have yard work or have such a big place to care for by now.

Dear William, Leah and all the family- inlaws, outlaws, Neighbors and Friends.
Thanks for your cute little newsie card,
I am sorry to hear of the misfortune Dennis had and to know that you are allergic to so many things, I hope his wife soon recovers and that yu can overcome alot of that allergy. A part of the desert may be good for you where nothing grows, unless you are like me, allergic to loneliness. A change of climate may help. where there would be a different type of vegetation.
Where did you get the idea that I was sick or had lost any of my health?
Was it because I had a little operation, my thirteenth? Why I almost enjoyed it, the day after surgery I was pushing a younger man around in a wheel chair, he had the same operation as I and the same day but he was more scared than hurt.
I have never felt better than I do now, I do all the work around my five homes, Vern Howards three, Lula’s two, Leona’s and four or five old widow’s homes.
The Lord has certainly blessed me with good health, but I am only 82 and will perhaps start having poorer helath when I get old. When people ask why I have such good health I tell them that when I was young I drank, used tobacco and did everything I could do to make me sick and saved my good health for my old age.
I sure hated to miss the reunion, I think I’ll drive up there a time or two in the spring to make sure that my car can do it when the time comes.
I have a very small cancer and am taking treatments from a doctor in Mexico.
He is wonderful, curing people by the hundreds yet the dirty medical association makes it unlawful to bring his medicine into the U.S. I know some people who the best doctors here have given up and told them they could live only a few months, who were cured down there. So may be I’lll lose the only little cancer I ever had if I don’t quit going there. Out of paper and my think tank is empty so will close, Love to all of you, Uncle Elmo Sorry to waste this space Merry Xmas

  Dear Mr. Howard January 1981
Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a happy new. As far as I know I have made every payment this year except I think I missed March 1981. But because I made 300.00 payments for one year and one half before that March that extra 30.00 makes another payment so I should be right on schedule. And be paid in full in eight years.

Dear Sister and all my loved ones there, also Leah, Bill and family.
Please forgive me for not answering your letters sooner, I have been sick and so dizzy I could not think straight. I seemed to have about seven kinds of sickness at the same time, it left me very weak and shakey but I am getting over it slowly. I sleep a lot even in the day time, a thing I never used to do, and I am always thirsty, I say I have the hoof and mouth disease for I drink and run (to the toilet)
I have a lot of friends who worry about me more than I do. I am afraid they will put me into my second childhood babying me so much.
Sunday May 24th well here I go again, I hope they will let me finish this letter now. I had a very pleasing surprise yesterday when those two sweet little bundles of love came to see me, and how I did want to come up there with them, but it seemed there was some reason why I should not, finally my old brain, or what little I have left, kicked over and I remembered that I have to go to the toilet about four times per hour; I think they would have been willing to put diapers on me and changed them for me if I had agreed, BLESS THEM.
I am feeling much better now, don’t tremble so much nor tire so soon.
Now about that strange acting girl who was in my home when Leah called, She is a girl who Vitris and I took under our wings when she was a little tot, Her dad was an American soldier who married a pretty Japanese girl, brought her home with him, then deserted her after she had two children, a boy and girl. She had to work all day and the kids had no one to care for them, the boy looked like the other kids here but poor Mary was more like Japanese than her mother and kids can be very cruel even after she joined the church some of our kids were unkind. She married was divorced and she and another L.D.S. grass widow lived together until someone burned their garage and fortunately a neighbor called the fire department in time to save the house so they moved to another town where a lady promised to rent to them but when Mary started unloading so many bird cages, fish tanks and other pets the lady kicked her out so she rented a garage to store her things in but it would not hold half of them so called and askedif she could put them in my yard, she had to unload that expensive van, so she filled my yard and went...woke me up and asked if she could put some of the things in my house so I got out a sick bed and we filled all my rooms and garage and covered the rest as best we could then she came here every day to feed her menagerie. I guess that is what she was doing when Leah called and she perhaps thought it may be someone trying to find her so they could come and burn her out again.
She rented the largest van she could find, stuffed it full and moved to Salt Lake and I still have a lotof her things in my house, garage and yard. I hope the poor girl has better luck up there.
I live alon, I am happy and getting well but I will have to come up there and see my dear sister and all of you. Those dear little girls made me homesick. I lose a little money at times loaning to people who I think are my friends but I would much rather do that than refuse a friend who needs it.
Silver and gold will be worthless

But a dear friend will be priceless

I enjoy working in the temple and the Church cannery. We are canning tons of food and we may need more, we may have along famine.
I made a dehydrator out of a refrigerator. I use two light bulbs to furnish heat and a small fan to blow the hot air up through the screen shelves, I dried about 23 pounds of carrots and put them all into two 1 gal. jars, I thik I could put them in one jar by crushing them, I want to dry a lot of things.
I am enclosing a wedding present for that boy who returned from a mission and married the little Lamanite girl, I love the Lamanites.

 Dear Elmo
Will we are glad to see the Lord has decided to leave you here for a while longer. Not many of us have or Chance to stay, after such a close call as you have just passed through If we did we might be able to look over our lives & erase some of the small & petty things & become more perfect & prepared for the Celestial World.
I hope the good news I have to share with you today will inspire & thrill you to, as it did me.
Aurelia Called a sister Elizabeth Howard Mills in Salt Lake yesterday. She had Submitted a sheet (family group) for James Howard a Brother to your grandfather, William. She is 89 years old & knew all about Jim & his wife & the two boys. Ernest was adopted by the Hills & lived at Castleville [Castle dale] Utah & James the youngest one was adopted to a World family in Price, Utah. He became a duplicate of his father & drank himself to death) & is buried at Price. This sister Mills was a daughter to a Wm. Howard a older son of James who Came to America after the other three brothers came with your family (James Robert & George) She came from a family of about 15 or 16 & they all joine3d the Church & were good members too. She said she would be sure we could have any information she has if we would just write & let her know. She had a burial date for James son of Wm & Jane Bond which we hadn’t had 12 March 1889 which makes us think perhaps the Older son stayed behind to be sure he was cared for until his death. Then hurried before they came over. (I’m just guessing though)
She says Robert had a son Paul Howard who lives in California not too far from your area.

I... I hope this news warms you all the way through & makes you want to get up & start dancing a jig to start you on the long road back to recovery. It should at least help you change your Self image you are a special person & part of you is Divine. And as such should be given some very special attention. Buy yourself a nice warm cloth robe to adorn that special body of yours & so that you will be warm when they get you up to exercise & sit in a chair. Give yourself some of that Tender Loving Care you have been lavishing on those around you It will do you a world of good. It can build up your moral & spirit - so you will want to get up & wheel younger men up & down the Halls (as you did at one time) Then try to win the esteem of your Dr & the Nurses there. You can do it, because you have what it takes to win friends & influence people around you
We love you & pray you will accept take this in the spirit we have given it for we want you to be happy & doing the will of the father.

We had a lovely trip down there & enjoyed it there were people on the plane from Orange County Airport to San Fransico. then from San Jose to here We flew through Seattle & had a lay over for an hr. So I called ahead & our boy met us at the airport. Mother said that was a real treat to come off the plane & see these smiling little faces of my Grand children.
Mom has had an abyas on her seat but weathered the trip because of her desire to see you & to help you She is a real special person & has always tried to help others, & forget herself so she is just now leaving to do a few things she has wanted to do all her life
 God bless you both

Dear Brothers and Sisters: (picture of Elmo on front)
...Elmo Howard is 89 years old and sometime or other he has broken every bone in his body and some twice or three times. Arthritis is crippling him but in spite of his probelms, he is the assistant to the High Priest Group leader, he seldom ever misses a meeting; he goes regularly to the Temple to do endowment work, sealins, initiatory work and what ever else he is called to do. We all could use him as an example to speed up our own responsibilities...

  “Ninety-one Beautiful Productive Years”
In the year of 1890 on the 9th of March, Elmo Howard was born, so that puts him in the 91 year bracket. I have become very closely associated with Brother Howard since I have become his High Priest Group Leader. In fact I selected him as one of my assistance along with Brother Arthur Bodine. My memory goes back some 35 years when the 70’s food group, headed by Elmo prepared 5 gallon cans of wheat for food storage. I remember purchasing several cans and just recently I opened one and the wheat was just as good and fresh as it was the day they put it in cans. As long as I’ve known Elmo, he has been busily engaged in the work of the Lord. When a young man, he fulfilled a mission in the Southern States. In fact he stayed an extra 6 months. Since then, he has filled 5 more missions. He is known for his generosity as he has helped others to go on missions and helped some through school. I think his greatest love is for children and they love him also. I’ve never heard him say no to a calling and at age 91 he still works harder than most people. There are very few homes of the aged in our Ward that Elmo hasn’t been in to fix something. How can we help loving a guy like that,.. So Elmo on your 100th birthday we’ll give you a party that you’ll remember for the next 100 years.
