 LANCASHIE. WHEREAS Complaint hath this Day been made unt us whose Names are subscribed, and Seals hereunto set, Two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace and Quorum in and for the County of Lancaster, and residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church of Wigan in the Parish of Wigan in the same county, by the Overseers of the Poor of the Township of Pemberton in the said Parish, that Sarah Pendleton of the Said Township, Single-woman was about twenty one weeks ago delivered a male Bastard Child, in the same Township, which is since christened by the Name of James and is now alive and chargeable to the said Township, and likely so to continue; and she the said Sarah Pendleton being this Day brought before us the said Justices, by the said Overseers of the Poor to be examined concerning the Premises, and to make a due Filiation of her said Bastard Child, hath upon her Examination, this Day taken upon Oath before us the said justices, deposed, and declared, that she was delivered of such Bastard Child as aforesaid, and that John Taylor of Pemberton aforesaid Weaver is the true and only Father of the said Bastard Child who hath had due notice to appear before us to answer the Charge but hath not appeared or shewn any sufficient cause why the said Child shall not be filated upon him.
 Now we the said Justices, upon hearing the said Complaint upon Oath, do hereby declare and adjudge the same to be true, and do also as well upon Examination of the Cause and Circumstance of the Premises, upon the Oath of the said Sarah Pendleton as otherwise, declare and adjudge the said John Taylor to be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child; and thereupon, as well for the better Relief of the said Township of Pemberton as for Keeping and Relief of the said Bastard Child, do order that he the said John Taylor shall and do forthwith pay, or cause to be paid unto the said Overseers of the Poor of that Township, or some of them, the Sum of three pounds which they have expended, and been put unto Reason and on Account of the said Sarah Pendletons Lying-in, and in maintaining of the said Bastard Child to the Time of the making of this our Order; and also that he the said John Taylor shall and do pay or cause to be paid, unto the Overseers of the Poor of the Township of Pemberton aforesaid for the Time being, or some of them one Shilling and three pence in Money, Weekly and every Week from this present Time, for and during so long Time as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Township, for and towards the Relief and Keeping of the same Bastard Child; and also that she the said Sarah Pendleton shall and do pay or cause to be paid, unto the overseers of the Poor of the said Township of Pemberton for the Time being or some of them one Shilling and three pence in Money, Weekly and every Week, so long as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the same Township, for and towards the Relief and Keeping of the said Bastard Child, in case she shall not nurse and take care of the same herself. given under our Hands and Seals at Wigan aforesaid this twenty ninth Day of June in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety eight.
