Note: DOB: According to an Affidavit by Robert Asa Hancock in his Civil War Pension record the family Bible said William was born on 1 Oct 1837, but was later changed to 1 Oct 1838. [1837 better fits with the census records] William Hancock, is listed as a Farrier (Blacksmith) in Company B of the Union's 54th Mounted Infantry, along with his brothers, Robert A. Hancock, 2nd Lieutenant, and Thomas H. Hancock, Sergeant. Hancock, wife, age 67, md. 44 years, bn Ky From HISTORY OF SULPHUR BAPTIST CHURCH: Sulphur having invited a council to assist in the organization of a church at that place, the council met on November 4, 1884. A sermon was preached by D. N. Porter. The council was called to order by D. N. Porter, who was chosen moderator, and Ernest Yager was chosen clerk. Delegates were called for and were enrolled from the following churches: HiIlsboro - Rev. J. M. Eaton and W. B. Morris; Campbellsburg - Rev. G. W. Thompson, T. P. Jones, C. T. Scott, Ernest Yager, and Elias Lucket; Antioch - Oscar Coleman; Cove Hill - Frank Johnson, F. W. Vories, and Rev. Levi Chilton; Eminence - Rev. D. N. Porter, Evan Rodgers, W. Duncan and J. Wise; Hopewell - William Violet; Middle Creek - Joseph Powell and James Morgan; Sligo - Frank Spillman, W. A. Foote, A. S. Adcock, John Tharp and John Browning; New Providence - J. M. Caplinger. A committee was appointed to prepare a Church Covenant and Articles of Faith. On this committee were G. W. Thompson, G. P. Bostigk, Levi Chilton, J. M. Eaton and Evan Rodgers. G. P. Bostick was invited to a seat in the council. A report of this committee was presented and the Articles of Faith and Covenant were adopted by the council. The letters of dismission were read and those who wished to join the new organization were enrolled. These members were then advised to organize themselves into a church and the Articles of Faith were read again and adopted. David Morris was chosen moderator, and N. C. Shouse was chosen clerk. Brother David Morris was chosen to act as deacon by the organization as he had been a deacon at Hillsboro from which church he had brought a letter. Bro. William Hancock was then chosen and ordained a deacon. Rev. G. W. Thompson was called to the pastorate of the church which took the name of Sulphur Baptist Church. The hand of fellowship was given to the church by the council. A vote of thanks was given to the Christian church for the use of their church building. The first regular service was held on the first Saturday in December 1884 with a sermon by the new pastor and arrangements were made looking toward the erection of a church edifice at this place.
