Descendant of Samuel Edgcomb, Jr., of Connecticut. Daughter of Edmund Williams and Julia Edgcomb, his wife. Granddaughter of Samuel Edgcomb, Jr., and Rachel Copp, his 2nd wife. Samuel Edgcomb, Jr., (1760-1843), served as a minute man at the battle of Groton Heights, 1781. He died in the house where he was born in Groton. (Also No. 33644) The following details are taken from the Application for Membership to The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington, D.C., of Mrs. Julia Williams Quaintance, the wife of John Quaintance, 887 West End Avenue, New York City, NY, National Number 38334, approved on 7 Jan 1902, accepted on 8 Jan 1902, State of Connecticut, City of New London, Lucretia Shaw Chapter: The applicant's ancestor, Samuel Edgcomb, Jr, who served in the War of the Revolution, was born in Groton in the year 1760 and died in Groton on 25 Feb 1843. The applicant stated that she was born in the Town of Lee, County of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts; that she was the daughter of Edmund Williams and Julia Edgcomb, his wife, and that the said Julia Edgcomb was the daughter of Samuel Edgcomb, Jr and Rachael Copp, his 2nd wife. It was further stated that Samuel Edgcomb, Jr assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of a soldier at the battle of Groton Heights, the 6th day of September, 1781. "Samuel Edgcomb, my grandfather, who fought at the battle of Groton Heights, September 6th, 1781, although but a lad in years, is mentioned in Miss Caulkin's history of New London, page 560, as follows: 'Samuel Edgcomb, a stout lion-hearted man, who survived the battle, stated that they threw down cold shot, like a shower of hail upon the assailants, but it scarsely checked them a moment so furious was their onset.'" - Caulkin's History of New London, page 560 (Nat'l No 33644) [end] According to Julia's Death Certificate, #38296: Julia Williams Quaintance was born in South Lee, Mass., the daughter of Edmund Quaintance (error - should be Edmund Williams) and Julia Edgecomb, parents born in Groton, Ct., resided in NYC for 38 years, her place of death was 887 West End Ave, Manhattan, New York City, NY, she died a widow, on 22 Nov 1904, age 82 years 4 months 8 days, and was buried in Saugerties, NY on 25 Nov 1904.
