  Benjamin Roads (age 54) with wife Elizabeth (age 52) and son Henry C. (age 26) appear living near son Benjamin L. Roads in the 1870 US Census - Kentucky - Ohio County - Bartlett District - Page 324 - Household 136. Also living nearby are son William L. (age 24) and his wife Francis (age 27). The census was taken on 24 June 1870.
  There is an oral family tradition that one or more of the Benj R's sons served on opposite sides in the Civil War. However, sons, Benj L and Samuel G. Rhodes, were on the Union side, both enlisting in the 12th Ky Cavalry Regiment, Co E. Benj L. Rhodes enlisted as a private, deserted, was taken prisoner and was then paroled, failing to report to his company; while Sam. G. Rhodes mustered-out as a Corporal. Other sons Napoleon and Wm. L. Rhodes, were also on the Union side, both being privates in the 35th Ky Infantry, Co D. I find no record of service for brother, Henry C., or for Mahlon S. who was too young to serve. So, it may well be that the rumor actually surrounded Benj L.'s desertion.
