According to Franklin County Birth records, "born on November 23, 1853 - Charles M. Johnson- male - alive - born Franklin County - father, Unknown (illegitimate) - mother, Parthenia Johnson - white - resident of Franklin County." Note: Perhaps Charles was in-fact the son of Melvin, Sr. According to Pat Scheidt "this was a period in history rather parallel to the potato famine in Europe. Sometimes men left home to work on roads and buildings, leaving their wives in charge of property, or with relatives for periods of time, but not leaving home permanently. Also, people went around doing farm work and odd jobs in other counties in times of economic hardship." So it may be if Parthenia's husband was away at Charles' birth that it was merely assumed the child was illegitimate.
