Notes
a. Note:   From April Glover (Nmbr1mom007@@aol.com):
The Atlanta Argus Atlanta, Illinois Friday June 26, 1896:
Margaret Layton was born in Anderson County, Kentucky, Feb. 23, 1822 where she grew up and in October 12, 1846 was married to John D. McBrayer. They remained in Kentucky until after the rebellion, moving to Illinois in the fall of 1869. Mrs. McBrayer was the mother of five children, two sons and three daughters, all of whom, with her husband, survive her. She was converted at the age of 20, uniting at first with the Methodist church but after her marriage uniting with her husband with the Baptist church, in which communion and faith she remained until the end. She departed this life June 20th, 1896, aged 74 years, 3 months, and 27 days. Her last sickness was but the continuance and culmination of more than three years of illness, and was borne with patience and christian fortitude. She often expressed to her pastor and others her entire and confident trust in Jesus, her Saviour, and toward the last longed to depart and to be with Jesus, her friend. The words of the hymns sung at this time were upon her lips and voiced her faith and hope. Her memory is fragrant with the good deeds done to others. Blessed in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. The funeral occured Sunday afternoon June 21, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Primin, a farmer pastor and Rev. J.G. White. [end]
The following Layton Family Genealogy is from Angelo Gordon (angelogordon@@msn.com):
MARGARET LAYTON - 6 (wife of John D. McBrayer)
Margaret Layton, daughter of David and Letitia (Cowgill) Layton, was born February 23, 1823/1822 at Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky. John D. McBrayer, son of Preston and Keziah (Galloway) McBrayer, was born circa 1824 in Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky. Margaret and John D. were step first cousins. Keziah (Galloway) McBrayer was the sister of Margaret's stepmother Malinda W. (Galloway) Layton. The McBrayer and Layton families were also linked a generation before in Franklin County, Kentucky (before Anderson County, Kentucky was created out of Franklin County, Kentucky in 1827). In 1821 a James Layton married a Permelia McBrayer. In 1826 a Hiram Layton married a Nancy McBrayer.
In 1840 Margaret would have been about eighteen years old. An 1840 record for John D. has yet to be found. Before her marriage to John D. McBrayer, Margaret united with the Methodist Church. Margaret married John D. McBrayer, October 9, 1843 in Anderson County, Kentucky. A marriage bond is recorded between John D. McBrayer and David Layton, Margaret's father. There does not appear to be a record of the minister's return. After their marriage, John D. and Margaret united with the Baptist Church.
September 19, 1850 John D. and Margaret were living in Anderson County, Kentucky where John D. worked as a wagon maker. They do not appear to have had anything in real estate. They had one child born in Kentucky. A James A. McBrayer, Assistant Marshal, was the census taker.
June 2, 1860 John D. and Margaret were living in Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky where John D. continued to work as a wagon maker. John D. and Margaret had $150 in personal estate. John D. and Margaret had four more children born in Kentucky. It appears that both John D. and Margaret could read and write. No information is given anywhere on this census page for attendance in school within the year for any children of any of the families listed. After the Civil War, John D. and Margaret moved to Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois
July 8, 1870 John D. and Margaret were living in Atlanta Township, Logan County, Illinois, post office Atlanta, where John D. still worked as a wagon maker. Margaret's occupation was listed as "keeps house." No amount of real estate or personal estate was listed in this census for John D. and Margaret. Their son, David, now in his twenties, also worked as a wagon maker. All other children were listed as "at home." Their four younger children, ages eighteen, sixteen, thirteen, and eleven all attended school within the year. Also in the household appeared a carpenter in his fifties, named Henry Fisker.
June 5, 1880 John D. and Margaret were living in Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois with three children. John D. was employed as a janitor at the school house. It was declared that Margaret's parents were both born in Kentucky.
John D. and Margaret's grand daughter, Josephine (Dunnegan) Wilson, provided the following vignette in a letter written in December, 1975. In the letter she stated, "You spoke about me having a good memory being able to remember my grandparents. All I remember is walking over to the bed room where my grandmother was in bed and she would reach out her hand to me and she would reach out and love there in bed. I remember seeing my grandfather sitting in a big chair wrapped up in a heavy comforter that is all. They died two or three weeks apart. Grandmother first. I was between two and three years old at that time."
Margaret (Layton) McBrayer died of palsy June 20, 1896 in Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois. About three weeks later, John D. McBrayer died July 10, 1896 of a complication of diseases including dropsy in Atlanta, Illinois. John D. and Margaret were buried near the tool shed in Lot 74 of the first addition to Atlanta Cemetery, Atlanta, Illinois, locations N14B and N14A. The grave fee costs were three dollars per person.
John D. and Margaret had at least five children including:
  1. David William McBrayer, born July 24, 1848 Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, married Zella Todd November 28, 1875 in Atlanta, Illinois died December 10, 1933 Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, and buried in Kechi Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.
  2. Ann Eliza McBrayer, born circa 1851 in Kentucky, and died ?. She never married.
  3. Margaret "Allie" (McBrayer) Dunnegan, born March 12, 1856 Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, married Howard Dunegan September 25, 1888 in Logan County, Illinois, died February 20, 1936 in Normal, McLean County, Illinois, and was buried in Atlanta Cemetery, Atlanta, Illinois.
  4. Mary Elizabeth (McBrayer) Todd Taylor, born circa 1857 in Kentucky, married first Robert James Todd October 30, 1875 in Logan County, Illinois, married second James T. Taylor December 16, 1896 in DeWitt County, Illinois.
  5. John H. McBrayer, born March 9, 1859 Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, married Allison E. Waldrose March 10, 1897 in Logan County, Illinois, and died ?
Zella Todd and Robert James Todd were sister and brother.
In 1975 Josephine (Dunnegan) Wilson, granddaughter of John D. and Margaret (Layton) McBrayer, provided a tin type of her grandparents with another one of their grand daughters, Maggie McBrayer, taken about 1885. This contribution accompanied the statement, "Just last year I destroyed all old family pictures as no one interested to survive me. I rather destroy them myself." Tragically, this researcher had Josephine's address well before her decision to destroy old family photographs. [end]
