Born August 8, 1926 in Van Nuys, Los Angeles County, California to Ray E. and Madeline Helen (Millikan) Huggins. [Had the same birthday as his grandfather, James Oscar Huggins]
Parents separated when John was about the age of 7, and then later divorced in the 1940's.
Raised in Van Nuys, Los Angeles County, CA. John attended Van Nuys schools, and loved shop classes. Summer breaks, John's mother would take he and his sister Marjorie up to the mountains in Downieville, Sierra County, CA to visit their father who was mining. It was fishing in the Yuba River at Goodyears Bar, that John had caught his first trout.
Being the younger teasing brother that he was, he once called his sister and her high school boy friend (Harold "Swede" O'Halloran, later to be her husband), Mutt & Jeff, due to height difference between them. This had drawn a response from Marge's boy friend, in which a foot race pursued. John felt quite proud himself, out running his future brother-in-law, since Swede was a well known high school athlete. Or could it have been just out of fear, that John out ran Swede.
John's mother Madeline, through hard work and saving was able to purchase her first automobile. Following storms, young John to sneak off, take his mother's car and earn additional money by pulling out stuck autombiles. Not having a father around, as a teenager, John found himself in a great deal of trouble with the authorities.
John, left high school early and ran away to visit his father in the very early 1940s, who was residing and working in the shipyards in Alemada, California. John's mother and sister came up from Van Nuys, California to retrieve him and return him to school. Then in 1943, he and his best friend Avery "Av" Pickering, drove from Van Nuys, California to Lincoln, Nebraska to visit friends and stayed. This is were where he initially met Dorothy Darlene Hand, who would later become his wife. With WW II in progress and John being 17 years old, he had to obtain written permission from his father due to military enlistment age restrictions.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following WWII, John returned to Lincoln, Nebraska and married Dorothy (Darlene) on February 22, 1948.
June 28, 1946 while riding his Indian motorcycle in downtown Lincoln, NE, John was struck from behind by a car. The resulting accident nearly severed his left hand. A near by police officer who saw the accident, rendered immediate first aid. Following several surgery's John had most of the mobility in his left hand except for the small and ring fingers, of which he had no mobility or feeling.
John loved carpentry and working with his hands, and as his family grew, he built an addition onto his and Darlene's first house at 4301 F Street, in Lincoln, This also included erecting a detached garage. John and Darlene had always desired of purchasing an acreage in which to build on and raise their family. Then in the early 1960's they purchased one acre lot with an older two story farm house at 7801 A Street. From this dwelling, John designed and built a new house utilizing the older two story farm house as it's primary structure.
This house as 7801 A Street was an ongoing construction project until John's retirement, all the while watching as the city of Lincoln grew up around them. Then with failing health, in 2002 John and Darlene sold the house and moved into the retirement community of Eastmont Manor in Lincoln, this not being an easy move, after having lived in one house for forty years.
John's career included that of a Cabinet Maker for the Gold's Co. department store, Carpenter with Evans & Evans Home Builders and then moved into heavy commercial construction as a carpenter.
First with Ausamacher Construction, then approximately 1960, John went to work for Kingery / Builders Construction Company, where eventually he moved into Construction Management. Promoted from Carpenter to Foreman, finally serving with Kingery as a Superintendent for 38 years. All of John's career, he was extremely dedicated to his work, putting off any vacation and personal events until work project were completed. Retired officially at the age of 71, but continued for a couple of years performing part time construction oversight work.
Though as a child, he had made a few journey's with his mother and sister from California back to visit family relations in Kansas, it wasn't until John relocated to Nebraska that he really had to opportunity to get to know more of his relations in Kansas and South Dakota, which gave him more of a sense of family unity. In John's adult years, would be take his young family on weekend excursions to visit his father, who was then farming outside of Lexington, Missouri.
He was an outdoor sportsman, as time permitted. With family camping excursions, John enjoyed lake and stream fishing, mostly in the midwest, but did make an expedition into Canada of which he had fond memories.
Was a keen pheasant and quail hunter in the region, often taking along his sons. Had gone deer hunting only once, but wished he had more opportunities to do more.
It was on one local pheasant hunt with this brother-in-law, Don Hand, that John had come upon and surprised a skunk. Well the skunk didn't miss and John was in no condition to return directly back home. Don drove them to a motel, checked-in and snuck John into the room to clean up.
