Note: Tom, had been active in Scouting and Little League Baseball as a youth. An outdoors man, he loved bird hunting and fishing in southeastern Nebraska. Late 1973, Tom enlisted in the US Army after obtaining a local doctors written permission. Basic training aggravated a life long back problem that ultimately placed him on restricted duty during Basic Training at US Army Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana. Having only served 4 months and 25 days Tom, received a medical discharge. Hobbies included customizing his Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle and presenting it in area Car / Motorcycle shows. Enjoyed off-road bike riding on is Kawasaki motorcycle. Was close to his family and was a very generous person, always offering a helping hand when needed. Following a Thanksgiving family gathering in Lincoln, in 1977, Tom was dirt bike riding with friends on a bitter cold day, east of Blue Springs, Gage County, NE. The group had returned to their car to obtain additional clothing, when Tom collapsed. Cause of death deemed to have been cardiac arrest due to walking pneumonia. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wymore Arbor State, Wymore, NE December 1, 1977 Cyclist Dies At Rock Quarry Natural pulmonary causes resulted in the death of a Lincoln man, Thomas J. Huggins, 27, Sunday at the rock quarry two miles east of Wymore, according to Gage County, Attorney Chuck Balsiger's office. An autopsy on Huggins showed natural pulmonary disorders involved in the death, although further determination will be made, Balsiger's office reported. Huggins and some friends had been riding motorcycles at the rock quarry when Huggins and his cycle suddenly fell over. Sheriff Fred Steinkamp Jr. said. No foul play of any kind was involved, the sheriff added. Wymore Volunteer Rescue Unit was called at 12:42 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary: THOMAS JOHN HUGGINS Thomas John Huggins, 27, 7801 A St., died Sunday, son of John and Dorothy Huggins, was born March 8, 1950, at Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended schools here graduating from East High. He spent at short period of time working for the Burlington Railroad and in the Military Service. For the past few years he has been working for Kingery Construction Company. He is survived by his mother and father, two sisters; Suzanne (Mrs. Richard Cline) of Omaha, and Sandra Kaye Huggins of Lincoln and two brothers; Jerald H. of Greeley, Colorado, and John Michael of Lincoln; grandparents, Ray E. Huggins, Lexington, MO.; Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Hand, Lincoln; niece; nephew. Death on Sunday, November 27, 1977. Funeral and interment on Wednesday, November 30, 1977.
