 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known to her grandchildren as "Nanna". She had not spoken about herself to her children, and in conducting family genealogy, it was discovered, how accomplished a lady she really was.
Following a long distance correspondence relationship with former neighbor Ray Huggins, who was residing and working with his twin brother Orie in southeast Iowa, Madeline married, Ray just as he was being drafted into World War I and going off to the US Navy. Madeline remained with her parents during Ray's absence, but joined him upon his return from the war and re-establishing a business in Washington, Iowa. The brother's operated a lunch counter, and Madeline baked pies for the business.
When Ray's twin brother, Ora, married in the early 1920's, the two couples set off to Hollywood, CA to make their fortune, but never entered the movie picture industry.
It was in California, that Madeline and Ray began their family with a daugther Marjorie and a son John.
During the depression era, the family business ("Huggins Brothers Eggs") in San Fernando Valley, CA failed as a result of customers unable to pay their bills. Husband Ray had been involved in an extramarital affair that had strained the marrage, and searching for work during these economically challenging times in the early 1930's, Ray elected to venture out to the gold mining region in the Serria mountains. Madeline, concerned about quality education in the mining towns for her childern, remained in Van Nuys, CA.
Madeline worked as an independent seamterist and as a nannie, to well off families in order to support her and the children. One family's children she had looked after were Mr & Mrs. Foley, a well known Cinema photographer.
Wishing to sustain her children, Marjorie and John's relationship with their father, in the summers, Madeline would take the family to visit Ray, Orie & Wilma, as well as Madeline's brthers in Downieville & Goodyear Bar, California. Madeline would also take the children back to Olathe, Kansas on the train or shared automobile rides, to visit other relatives.
Though separated for more than ten years, 1945 Ray filed for divorce in order to remarry. Madeline took the request for divorce extremely hard. Madeline never remarried.
With the children grown and gone, Madeline took on yet another task as loving care giver following her fathers passing. Madeline brought in her mother from Kansas, to look after her for another ten years. Madeline's mother, Helen (Kelly) Millikan, stayed pretty much to her room and eat her meals there. The great-grandchildren in California were not allowed to interact with their great-grandmother, whether that was requested of Helen, or the wishes of Madeline, is unknown.
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Divorce Decree Granted, listed in Vital Statistics - Reno Evening Gazette (Reno, NV) March 16, 1945. Though Madeline and Ray had been separated for many years, the news for the divorce request from Ray came with surprise, causing deep hurt.

About 2001, Laura McKaig had purchased items at an auction in Olathe, KS. Within one item were five letters written by Ray Huggins to Madeline, prior to their marriage in 1918. Through the internet, Laura, contacted Ray and Madeline's grandson, Jerry Huggins and sent the historic letters on. (These letters have been transcribed and are attached in the Scrapbook of this database)
