Notes
a. Note:   Baptized December 26, 1782, Chapelry of Holmfirth in Almondbury John married Betty Platt of Saddlebrook in 1801 and they had a child Esther born at Greenowlers in 1802. They separated permanently a few years later. When his father died in 1813, John inherited both Greenowlers and one-half of the Lumb Bank Mill. His father had sold one-half of the Lumb Bank Mill to Joseph Broadhead in 1806. John had thirteen children by Hannah Broadhead, daughter of Joseph Broadhead all born at Greenowlers. John and Hannah were never married.
When John died in 1841, his oldest son Joseph, inherited Greenowlers, but the half share of the Bilberry Mill was inherited by all the children of Hannah Broadhead as tenants-in-common. Esther was also recognized in the will as was Hannah Broadhead. The gravestone of John and his two infant sons, James and Uriah is located in the Holmfirth town park as part of a retaining wall.
In 1840, an earthen dam was constructed across Digley Brook forming the Bilberry Reservoir. The Lumb Bank Mill was located just below the dam and subsequently was called the Bilberry Mill. On the night of February 5, 1852 the dam burst destroying the mill, inundating the village of Holmbridge and the town of Holmfirth. A year after the flood, the four oldest children, Maria, Joseph, John and Joshua emigrated to America and settled in Upper Darby, PA, where in 1858, they established a woolen and cotton manufacturing firm under the name of Whiteley Brothers and Company . By 1865, the rest of the family had emigrated to America and settled in Upper Darby or nearby. The family was quite prolific. John and Hannah had 59 grandchildren, all who either emigrated to or were born in America. These descendants constitute the following family tree.
