Smith. He was born in 1835, in or around Lebanon, Wilson County, TN. Some family members know he went by "Bert" and people around Lebanon referred to him as "Uncle Bert". A brief article published about him upon his death refers to him as "Uncle Bert", also. He appears on the 1850 census, as Burtrane/Burtrand, as a farm laborer in the HH of James and Lucy Hatcher. The 1850 census also shows: STUART, Charity, age 75 Smith, Milly, age 46 " , William, age 20 " , Susan, age 20, wife of Wm, ma 23 Nov 1849 " , Burton, age 16 " , Washington, age 10 " , Elizabeth, age 08 " , Peter, age 04 Since it isn't unusual for someone to be counted twice, I'm beginning to believe that Milly/Gilley is Bert's mother and that perhaps James was dead by 1850. There is a record for a James Smith marrying Gilly/Gilley Stewart on July 26, 1928 in Wilson County. In 1860, he is listed as Bertrand in the household of David and Elizabeth Young. In 1870 (B.T. Smith) and 1880 (Burtran T. Smith) he is in his own household with his wife, Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Fakes Smith and, as appropriate, their children: Nancy Louella (or Lou Ella?), b. 1866 James Thomas "Jim", b. 1868 Sarah F "Sallie" or "Sally", b. 1870 William B "Billy", b. 1872 Laura Elizabeth, b. 1875 Alexon Monroe, b. 1879 (my line) and P. S., unsure when he was born or what P.S. stood for (Perhaps Peter Stuart?), if anything. I haven't found PS on census records and he isn't listed in the family bible but he is mentioned in Laura's obit as one of her brothers "near Lebanon" and an elderly family member says yes, P.S. Smith was one of Bert's sons. At any rate, Donna Graves Farrell, who is helping me with Bert's parents, believes that James and Gilley/Gilly/Milly are his parents and I suspect she is correct. She also says that James Smith is one of the Buffalo Presbyterians that went to TN from NC. So, if anyone knows anything about James Smith or his wife and children, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! Denise Price Boyd"
