Urbana educator Ralph Wantland dies at 89
Urbana--- Ralph A. Wantland, 89, of Urbana died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday (Dec 10, 2005) at home.
Funeral services will be at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, U. The Rev. John Sims will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
There will be no public visitation. Mr. Wantland was born Apr 16 1916 in Moweaqua, a son of Clarence H. and Velma Hall Wantland. He married Virginia M. Renfro on Feb. 19, 1936 in Paris, Ill. She died Oct. 30, 1997.
Survivors include a son, Larry Wantland of Morristown, N.J.; a daughter Judith Anne Wantland of Urbana; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and a brother. Mr. Wantland retired in 1975 after serving for 22 years as principal of Webber School in Urbana. He also had served as principal or superintendent of schools in Cooksville, El Paso, and Deer Creek. He received degrees in education from Illinois State University in 1936 and from the University of Illinois in 1951and 1960. He was affiliated with local and state and national professional educational organizations and was president of the Illinois Elementary Schools Association in 1947.
He was active in the organization of the Champaign, Illinois County Mental Health Association and served as its president from 1958 to 1959. He organized the original Urbana Head Start Program and directed the program for two years. He was a member of the Champaign-Urbana Kiwanis club and was secretary of the First United Methodist Church of Urbana. After retirement, he joined his wife in her show and antique business, which she developed around 1970. He served as president for the Central Illinois Antique Dealers Association in 1975 and 1976.

Hobby of writing short stories, in the 40's and 50's, and after his retirement.
