He was born June 6, 1920 in Oconee, Illinois, the son of Leslie and Ruby (Huffaker) Steele. He was previously employed as the store manager of the A&P Grocery Store retiring after forty years of service. He continued his career as a grocer for fifteen more years finally retiring at the age of seventy-five. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. There was nothing in life he enjoyed more than spending time with his family. He married Kathern Renfro in 1945.
He leaves behind his wife Kathern, children Carol (Lynn) Surratt of Brenham, Texas, Jack Steele Jr. of Decatur, Greg (Carolina) Steele of Humboldt, Texas, Bob (Paulina) Steele of Baytown, Texas, Dave (Jennifer) Steele of Decatur, and Ron Steele of Decatur, daughter-in-law Vickie Steele Shinn of Decatur, grandchildren Jonathan Surratt, Tym Steele, Carla Fuqua, Chad Steele, Emily Steele, Zach Steele, Andrew Steele, Andra Steele, Sabrina Steele, and Carlos Steele, great-grandchildren Bella Steele, Dominique McMillan, Ashley McMillan, Chrissy McMillan, and Breanna Fuqua, and sister Barbara Biggers of Brenham Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leslie Steele, sister Marjorie Davenport, and son Rick Steele.
Graveside services to celebrate Jack’s life will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Graceland Cemetery.
