Note: September 1911 MACON BOY VICTIM OF DREAD DISEASE SPREAD OF INFANTILE PARALYSIS IS FEARED The fourteen year old son of Albert Renfro at Macon, died at 7 o'clock Friday night of infantile paralysis. His was the second case that has been discovered in Macon County within the last few days. The disease is known as anterior poliomyelitis. Death occurred from paralysis of the respiratory muscles after five days of suffering. IN SCHOOL MONDAY The boy was in school Monday morning, but did not feel well. He was taken sick Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning his feet were paralyzed. Later in that day the paralysis had worked up through his legs and some time later the abdominal muscles were paralyzed. Friday the paralysis seized the muscles of the respiratory organs, and after a hopeless struggle of several hours, in the effort to breathe, death resulted. A Decatur physician was called to Macon Friday night and was at the bedside of the boy when he died. DISEASE IS CONTAGIOUS The first case of the disease reported in Macon county was the one reported early this week, a woman on West Main street, in this city having a serious attack. She is recovering however. There is a possibility of the spread of the disease in Macon, as it is mildly contagious, and the boy was in school probably when taken.
