  1955 U. S. City Directory: Clarence H. Wantland, 805 Elm, Decatur, Illinois; deputy County Sheriff; wife Cath. I.;
  Clarence was raised on a farm of his parents in Otego Twp., Fayette Co, working as a farm laborer. As a young man (1910-1914), he moved to Macon Co., Illinois and worked as a clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad freight house in Decatur. While working as a hired hand on the farm of William Arnold and Florida Hall Arnold, he met and married their niece, Velma Hall (who was raised by the Arnolds after Velma's mother died of childbirth).
  Clarence and Velma resided in rural Prairie Home (elevator town near Moweaqua), Moweaqua, and Macon, Illinois. Clarence was a farmer near Macon; Then in Macon, he operated the Ford Garage, service station, and ice business. Around 1935 he became a Macon Co. deputy sheriff. About 1945 he was a quard (for one year) and a parole officer (for about 3 years) at Statesville Prison in Joliet, Illinois. Afterwards he again was a Macon Co. deputy sherrif and in later years, a bank guard.
  After his divorce and remarriage, Clarence resided in Decatur, Illinois until his death. Cause of death was complications from a stroke and heart failure. As a boy of twelve, he was run over by a horse drawn plow, severely lacerating his right leg. Medical inattention permitted infection which reoccurred periodically throughout his life, including at his terminal illness. (His son Ralph Wantland had told me on numerous occasions that Clarence's mother Josephine had packed the leg wound with a poultice containing manure)
 ------ The family lived in town, but for about a year in the 20's/30's, the family lived in a rented farm house near Macon. (oral conversation with Ralph Wantland, 2003)
