Velma (my paternal grandmother) was then reared by her maternal aunt and uncle, William Ansley Arnold and Florida Hall Arnold, she went by the name of Velma Arnold. The Arnold farm in Milam Twp., rural Macon, was adjacent to the farm owned by Albert Renfro, father of John Renfro (John Renfro is my maternal grandfather). So my maternal grandfather John Renfro and my paternal grandmother, Velma Hall Wantland lived on neighboring farms and attended the same rural Ocean Wave school (I have a picture of the class taken March 1908, showing Velma and John standing next to each other; the picture also has John's siblings Beulah and Paul. At the time of her death, she resided at 1105 S. Jasper St. in Decatur. Velma unofficially changed her middle name, Cassel (named for her Uncle John Cassel), to Catherine. Velma played the piano. Mother called Velma, Liz. cause of death: colon cancer, metastasis Decatur, Illinois Newspaper Naffziger Mrs. Charles (Velma C. Hall) Naffziger, 84, of 1105 S. Jasper St. died 7 a.m. Wednesday (March 4, 1981) in Americana Healthcare Center, Urbana. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home. Mrs. Naffziger was born in Greenfield, daughter of James E. and Essie C. Hall. She lived with William A. and Flora Arnold near Macon. She married Clarence H. Wantland in 1914. She married Charles Naffziger in 1944. He died in 1961. Surviving are her sons, R. A. Wantland of Urbana; Harold Wantland of East Peoria; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. One brother and five sisters preceded her in death.
