Note: ., Morrow Co., Ohio (film T9_1053, p372B) ------- Obituary in Sentinel Newspaper dated 31 Dec 1885 Memorial of Mrs. Rhodes The esteemed subject of this memoir, Mrs. Rachel Rhodes, whose recent sudden death was not more a surprise than a consideration and a regret, was born in Baltimore, Md., April 14, 1813. At an early age she removed with her parents, William and Nancy Shaw, to Millwood, Knox Co., Ohio. Her conversion and union with the Methodist Episcopal Church occurred at the age of sixteen. She was married in Millwood to Mr. John Rhodes, on Oct. 10, 1833. They at once removed to Mt. Vernon and established their home, where they remained until 1850, when they came to Mt. Gilead. Here the family have since resided. To them were given eight children all of whom are living except the daughter Normanda who died September 6, 1863. The death of the husband occurred July 5, 1874. Mrs. Rhodes apparently enjoying excellent health and manifested both interest and pleasure in the events and the associations of life. Cheerful, intelligent and christian, ever chiefly mindful of the happiness of others, her presence in the home was a benediction and her visits were welcomed by her children and grandchildren with especial delight. The past Christmas was to her a particularly pleasant occasion, enjoying with a company of friends the festivities of the day. That evening she retired in usual health. Not awaking next morning at the customary hour, she was found peacefully asleep, without sign of having moved or awakened; but it was the last painless and untroubled sleep of death. All the children and two of her sisters were present at the funeral. The services were conducted in the home at 1 p. m. on Tuesday, December 29, 1885, by Rev. G. W. Huddleston, the pastor, and the Choir of the M. E. Church assisted by Rev. Banker, pastor of the Baptist Church. As the fitting conclusion of a beautiful life of blessed influence, of devotion to her family to duty and to God, what sentiment could form a more appropriate eptiaph than the comfortingtruth that she died as she lived.
