Notes
a. Note:   Adam S. Carper came to Illinois with his parents in 1854. From 1855 to 1861 he worked as a carpenter. In Aug. of 1861 he enlisted in Co. F. 50th Reg. Ill. Vol. as a musician. He was DrumMajor (NCO ) by Dec. 1861. In May 1862 he received a Disability Discharge. He returned home and tried to return to work as a carpenter but his health would not allow it. He worked in the Marshalls' Office for a few years and in 1869 he became a barber. In 1879 he applied for and received a disability pension for his time in the service. He moved his family to Iowa in 1881, first to Waterloo and in 1885 to Des Moines. He worked in the Governors' office and at the State Archives. For eleven years he was chairman of the Polk County Soldiers Relief Society and from 1897 to 1901 he was engaged in the real estate business with Issac Brandt. In 1892 he was elected Commander of the Kinsman post #7. This GAR veterans association was very strong and active in politics at the turn of the century. This is when became known as Major. In 1901 he went to work in Governor Cummins office. In January 1910 Adam and Clementine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, in April 1910 Adam had a stroke. Adam and Clementine have many descendants in Des Moines and their grave is still visited often.
