Notes
a. Note:   James P. Smith, father of Ex-Alderman Smith and Fireman Michael Smith, died at his home, East Seventh and Market street, at 1 PM Thursday after a very short illness. He was one of the earliest settlers of East Des Moines. Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Callanan, died a year ago and her daughter, Mary, passed away soon after. Mr. Smith had been troubled with Bright's disease and had been several times bedfast. He was around the yard Wednesday reaping the grass and did not appear to be in extreme depression. He was 50 years old and a native of County Clare, Ireland. He came to Iowa from Illinois in 1867. Two sons are married, Thomas and Michael. The others live at home. Their names are William, George, James and John. There are also two daughters, Lizzie and Maggie. Mr. Smith belonged to St. Joseph's Mutual Protective Society, Catholic and another like organization, and also had $4000 life insurance. The furneral will be held from the Church of the Visitation Sunday afternoon. ( This Obituary is from the Iowa State Register, dated September 10, 1892 page seven.)
