Note: Came to Iowa in 1845 with his brother Montgomery. Taught the first school in Camp Township. Was a merchant in Rising Sun and then went into the real-estate business. Moved to Nevada, Iowa in 1858. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1861-62. Enlisted in the 32nd IA. INF. as a Lieutenant. Promoted to Captain in 1864 and served until November of 1865.
