a. Note:   Alexander's son Isaac stated on the 1880 census that his father was born in South Carolina. Alexander's grandson, Joseph (1833 - 1913), says Alexander was born in Charleston, South Carolina in his biography in "Portland The Rose City" published by S.J. Clark, 1911.
