Note: William was born and raised in Rockingham Co, VA, as was his wife. They married, and came to KY after 1820. They settled in what was then Christian Co., although it would become Trigg Co. before long. A Mathew Rolston, son of Samuel was already in Christian Co. (County of Christian, KY Historical and Biographical, 976.978 H2c, p. 443) having previously married in Rockingham, VA (Old Tenth Legion Marriages, H.M. Strickler; 975.892 V25).
1830 census, Christian Co., KY 0-0-0-0-0-1 (30-40); 2-3-1-0-0-1The 1830 census lists 6 female children. A Malinda Ralston is listed for this family in the appendix to A Chrisman/Christman Genealogy, Glen Christman (929.273 C461 cg), 1988, p. 356: "Malinda Ralston V (Jacob I, John II, Jacob III, Catherine IV, and William Ralston) b. Ky, 1819 [but 1860 census of Madison Co., IA lists her age as 51 (1809)]; d. Madison Co., Iowa; md. Christian Co., KY 9 Feb 1836 to Willie H. Compton. 1. Lucinda Angeline Compton VI, b. 1837; 2. Mary A. Compton VI, b. 1843; 3. William J. Compton VI, b. 1848; 4. Irena J. Compton VI, b. 1851. The Comptons were farmers in Christian County, Kentucky, and in Madison County, Iowa." But WorldConnect file says Malinda Ralston's parents were David Ralston and Susannah Mathews of Christian Co., 1830 census: 0-0-1-0-0-0-0-1(50-60) / 1-0-0-1-3(20-30) (Malinda 1809 would be one of the 20-30 year-olds). Proximity (both David Rolston and Comptons being in Christian Co. suggests this later scenerio., which means the sixth female child in the William Rolston family died young, which is not surprising in that era.
Public trees on Ancestry.com have Malinda as a daughter of David John Rolston (1775-1856) and Susannah Mathews (1775-1816).

Trigg Co., KY Court Orders C, film 0,312,333: p. 390 9 Aug 1847: Joseph Bouns, William Smith, Wm Ralston and A.B. Dyer be and are hereby appointed appraisers for the estate of Benjamin Mitchell, decd. The appraisment was returned on p. 407 no mention of Wm being alive or not.
Rockingham Co., VA marriages: 13 Oct 1780: James Dyer and Jane Rolestone - a connection between the Dyer family and the Rolstons. Also a Dyer was guardian of Emeline and D. W. Ralston.

Tidbit: A Mathew Rolstin is listed in the 1830 Wayne Co., KY census, near John Hall, great grandfather of James Pierce who married Emeline Rolston. This same Mathew Rolston is in the Livingston Co., KY 1850 census, next to Crittenden Co., where James and Emeline would live.
