[martha magruder 1813.ged] From Shelby County History 1884: In 1837 the following were the settlers then living in the county: Township 59, Range 10 James Ford, John Ralls, Samuel Cochrane, James G. Glenn, Robert McKitchen, Peter Looney, Joseph Moss, James Turner, Ferdinand Carter, John Moss, Peter Stice, John Serat, Lewis Kincaid, Elijah Hall, Hiram Rookwood, Sanford Pickett, James S. Pickett, William S. Chinn and Nathan Baker. Sanford Pickett and his sons, Hiram and James S. probably moved to Shelby County because Sanford's father-in-law, Hiram Rookwood, had immigrated to the County and was present when it was incorporated in 1835. KY; Elizabeth 18 all ch MO; William 16; Andrew J. 14; James Jr 13; Magruder 9. From Shelby County History 1884 The Missouri Convention having appointed Hamilton R. Gamble, Willard P. Hall and Mordicai Oliver and reconstructed the State government, it was decreed by that body that it was the duty of all civil officers in the State to take an oath to support the provisional government. The county officials were: Representative John McAfee; John F. Benjamin, county attorney; John Dickerson, sheriff and collector; deputy sheriff James L. West; treasurer C.K. Cotton; R.A. Moffett public administrator; C.B. Johnson school commissioner; M.J. Priest, assessor; justices of the county court, James S. Pickett, Perry B. Moore and Daniel Taylor. Of these officials Mr. Dickerson, West, Priest, Johnson, Moore and Pickett refused to take the "Gamble Oath". The others took the oath and retained their places. Judge of the Shelby County Court. Find-a-Grave Pickett Cemetery Bethel Shelby County Missouri, USA: James Sanford Pickett Born: Jun. 16, 1811 Fauquier County Virginia, USA died: Mar. 28, 1880 Shelby County Missouri, USA [the only two graves in this family plot are James and his wife]. From newspaper account of 1915 Pickett family reunion: Shelbyville Herald "James S. Pickett left Virginia before his parents removed to Missouir,k going to Kentucky, where he was married [to Martha "Patsy" Magruder.] He and his wife made the trip to Missouir on horseback. they reached here in 1835 and built the "Old home" in 1836. Members of the family say it was used as a school house until a suitable place could be built, and John chinn remembers attending school there.
