Folkert Folkers by Martha W. Neptun, Historian
Folkert Folkers was born October, 1811 and his wife Gesche Beck in March, 1801 in Oestfiesland, Germany.
Six children were born to this couple. Three of them were Siebelt Folkers, Anna Baker (Opa), and John Herman Folkers, whom we honor today. He was born on June 2, 1836 in Oestfriesland, Germany; coming to this country as a child with his parents, sister, and brother. This trip across the Atlantic Ocean took nine weeks in an old sailing vessel. They lived in New York for awhile. At the age of 14 he was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. The family decided to move west, and Peoria, IL became their permanent home.
It was here he met and married Inse Willms, also of Oestfriesland, Germany where she had also been born on December 28, 1842. At the time of their marriage, he was 20 and she was 14. Thirteen children were born to this couple, eight of them grew to adulthood.
Their names, and descendants of each are as follows:
Gesche Lemke was the oldest, and now living in Vesta, Minnisota, and has sixty-five decendants
 Anna Engels, deceased, ten decendants
Maria Jonssen Kamin, deceased, thirty descendants
John H. Folkers, his only son, and the first of eight to pass away, has nineteen descendants
 Sophia Knebel, deceased, eighteen descendants.
Emma Mellott Hofmann, deceased, twenty six decendants
Matilda Kissner, deceased, forty seven descendants and Martha Wholfeil now living in Hazen, North Dakota thirty five descendants
John H Folkers lived most of his life on the south side of Peoria, at one time farming, In 1875 he opened a grocery store in the 1100 block of South Adams St., Selling everything from bluing to beer. He had more than 50 good customers on his account book. Some of them were very prominent business men. It was in the basement of this store, the Frank Meyer Hardware business was started. In 1881, he built the home at 211 Garden Street, and started his oil business, he sold kerosene to housewives, as most homes were then lit by kerosene lamps. Later, he built several more houses on Garden, Hickory, and Brown streets. That part of Peoria was known as the Peoria Gardens. It is now recorded as the J.H. Folkers Subdivision.
In the year 1888,. Oma Folkers (Inse) went to St. Louis, MO to study midwife. She received her diploma and returned to Peoria to practice. The first birth recorded in her ledger was on December 8, 1888. The last one on January 11, 1903. During these fifteen years, she attended 1455 confinement cases. The birth record of a goodly number of you here today are in this ledger. She never turned down a call from a frantic father to be. Grandpa helped her by taking care of Nell, the good old horse she drove to answer calls, and always harnessed Nell while grandma prepared to go. It was on an errand like this in the early morning hours that Nell missed a narrow bridge. The top buggy turned over and grandma struck her head and broke an arm. She was also suffering from diabetes at the time. Six month later she passed away after three days of pneumonia.
Opa and Oma were of the lutheran faith and first attended the Old Trinity Lutheran Church on Jefferson Ave. Where all of their children were confirmed. They later became charter members of Christ Lutheran Church on Malone Ave. Founded in 1894. They both remained true to their Saviour until the day of death. They are buried in the Lutheran cemetery, and on their lot are buried his parents, several of their children and many granchildren. The graves are marked and there is also a marble monument for the Folkers Family.
Just a few more words about them. Opa never refused to help any of his children. on his fiftieth birthday, his children presented him with an ebony cane with a gold handle. This he gave to John H Knebel, our very good president, for he was the only granson with the same initials as his own J. H.
Oma was always happy on Christmas and Easter when she gave all her grandchildren little gifts. We believe we have every right to honor the memory of this good couple and be proud of them.
 Respectfully, Martha W. Neptun, Historian
