He was a master baker [Bäckermeister]. His name appears as Johann Harms Bakker. Both marriages and all children are listed.
  By convention in Ostfriesland, his name should have been Jann Albert Harms, taking as a last name the first name of his father, Harm Anton Harms. Apparently, an occupational last name was applied to him, probably around 1820, when he would have become a master baker, so he was thereafter known as Jan Albert Harms-Backer. In the US, only the very last name was used, so they became Backers.
  Jann Harms-Backer had three children by his first marriage. The two girls who survived infancy were probably safely married off by his death (The youngest would have been almost 30). However, as the church record states, he left 8 children by his second marriage, ranging in age from 6 to 24. Three years after his death, the eldest, Harm, and his new wife Maria, sailed to America with the Siebelt Folkers family:

 In his death record there is stated that he left behind eight minor children.
  Vital church records of Arle were available for research until 1852.
 In the churchbooks of Arle a marriage record to any of his children was not found (until 1852).
 His marriage record with Neeske Tebben was not found in the churchbooks of Arle-Westerpastore.,
 Arle-Osterpastorei, Nesse I and Nesse II (many records of Nesse of the time are faded and not
 legible). The marriage registers of Arle-Osterpastorei have a gap 1805-1814.

 9) On August 22nd, after the Proclamations on sundays 5, 6, 7 past Trinity, there got married at this place- The widower and master baker in Arle, Johann Harms Bakker and the young daughter, Sophia Janssen, legitimate dauahter of master blacksmith Jans Bonnen at Ostdorf.

 Feb22, 1847, Name of the place where the deceased was living: Arle, Order no.: 18, 1847 Register of the deceased and buried: Jann Harms Backer, master baker in Arle, husband of Sophia Carolina Janssen, died of consumption on February 22, at noon, in his 66th year of age, and
 was buried on March 2. He is leaving behind eight minor children.
