Notes
a. Note:   per 1900 census, he emmigrated to the US in 1856. In Illinois, the name is often Defreese; it might be a corruption of De Friesland. The first name, as usual, is related to the last name of Kasje.

 Benson Pioneer, Dies
Beloved Resident Passes Away at his Home, Saturday -- Funeral on Monday
With the passing of Reinke de Freese, Sr., on Saturday morning at 1:45 o'clock, the community of Benson has again lost one of its pioneer residents.
Mr de Freese was born in Ochtelbur, East Frisia, Germany, on July 17, 1850. When he was about six years old his father died and a number of years later his mother, brothers and sister emigrated to America. This left the young boy in Germany without close relatives and it was but natural that he wished to join the family in their new home. When friends of the mother were going to come to America in 1866, Reinke was confirmed in his home church and immediately thereafter he came to join the family which was living on the farm north of Benson, now occupied by Harm de Freese. Here he lived until after the death of his mother.
In 1893, on August 22, he was united in marriage with Miss Hiskea Peters. The couple lived on the farm now occupied by their son, Louis, until the spring of 1926, when they moved to Benson.
This union was blessed with six children, who all mourn the loss of their father. They are Mrs Marie Folkerts, Mrs John Manninga, Harm, Reinke, Louis and Henry. He is also survived by his widow and four grandchildren.
Mr de Freese always enjoyed good health until old age began to approach. During the past two or three years he lost strength and seldom left the house although really not sick until the last week of his life. During that week his strength failed rapidly and when pneumonia attacked him there was no hope for a prolonged life. He reached the age of 83 years, three months and 11 days.
Rev. O.H. Behrens officiated at the funeral services on Monday afternoon at St Peter's church of Benson, of which he was a member for many years. The following acted as pallbearers: Dick Gerdes, Frank Gommels, Wm. Mennen, Harm Tjaden, Ralph Oltman, E. A. Woltzen. Burial was in the church cemetery. Many from Minonk attended the funeral.]
