Shaffer, one of the early pioneers of the county, who settled in Monroe township before the civil war, was found dead in bed. He was 74 years of age. He retired at night apparently in his usual health, but on failing to arise Saturday morning his wife went to his bedside and found that he was dead. It was thought he had been dead for several hours. He was still living at his old home in Monroe township. In the years of his active life he had always taken an active interest in the public affairs of the county. He was a strong republican and attended nearly every county convention of his party. He was a man of strong mentality and was a leader in his township. He leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his sudden death.
