a. Note:   Military information -Company H 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry:
 James W. Shafer - at Wellington, Lorain county [Ohio], was enrolled a member of Company H, 2d Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, on the 9th of September, 1861. He veteraned at Mossy Creek, Tennessee, on New Years Day, 1864, with is company, and, after four years and two days of service, was mustered out with it, at Benton Barracks, Missouri, September 11, 1865. The service of the 2d Regiment of Ohio Cavalry was principally in Kentucky, Missouri, Indian Territory, Tennessee, under Sheridan in the Shenandoah valley and under Grant in his closing campaign about Petersburg and Richmond. Its battles include Independence, Missouri; Cow Skin Prairie, Indian Territoty; ; Somerset, Kentucky; Knoxville, Tazewell, Strawberry Plains and Mossy Creek, Tennessee; Berryville, Opequan, Cedar Creek, Waynesboro, and battles around Petersburg, as well as many minor engagements. Mr. Shafer was twice wounded, in the Wilderness, in charging a rebel battery, once in the foot and once in the stomach. Neither wound was serious, but made Mr. Shafer think he was a used up community all the same, he says. He was born July 24, 1841, a son of David and Hannah (Sherats) Shafer, his birth in Florence, Erie county, Ohio. He married Jennie E. Armstrong, at Oberlin, Ohio, July 3, 1866, and they have one son, Willie Welling, born July 4, 1867. Mr. Shafer's wife was born June 6, 1845, at Butternuts, Otsego county, New York, a daughter of William and Eunice (Gibson) Armstrong. When Mr. Shafer's health permits he follows farming for an occupation, but disability contracted in the service prevents his working much of the time. He has a slight pension, which should be increased. His postoffice address is Wakeman, Huron county, Ohio.
