Place of birth given as NC by the 1850 and 1860 census records as well as his brother Wm C. Bettis. Place of birth given as SC by biography of James Perry Pierce (grandson). This bio states that Eli died in 1874 and that his widow survived him only a short time. Another bio of Jacob Ahart Pierce (James Perry's brother) states that Eli died in 1869. The exact date DOB and DOD used here are from the physical gravestone, which appears to be original, not a replacement.

Can't find him in the 1860 census. His children were either out on their own or living with older children in Jefferson Co., (e.g., Joseph E. living with John S.). He therefore was, in all probability, not in Jefferson Co., TN to take his place as the head of the household, but also is not with his son (Jacob W.) who emigrated to Crittenden Co., KY.
1865 according to the bio of Jacob Ahart Pierce (his grandson), he emigrated from Jefferson Co., TN to Crittenden Co., KY and died in 1869.
Caldwell Springs Cemetery: tan stone (sandstone) at top of the hill that is broken and on the ground. The DOD is from the physical gravestone (lying in pieces at the Caldwell Springs graveyard), which appears to be the original and not a later copy put up be descendants.
