Note: His name is spelled Cortis, not Cortez or any other census mangle, since that is what he wrote down for his own name in the 1880 census, when he was the census taker. However, a Stanton P. Collins (not a stretch to think Stanton Pierce Collins) of Russell Co., KY (where Cortis' grandfather Stanton Pierce was born) named sons Desoto and Cortez (in this case Cortez is the spelling given the Desoto name). Crittenden Press, Feb. 22, 1924 - Cortez Jackson Pierce was the eldest son of the late James P. and Emma Ralston Pierce, and came to Marion with his parents some forty years ago. Mr. Pierce was associated with many of the city's business enterprises. For a number of years he was associated with his father in the hardware business under the firm name of Pierce and son. Mr. Pierce served for a number of terms as a member of the City Council. In 1916, he was married to Miss Laura Miles, of Paducah, a former Marion girl, who survives him.
