Notes
a. Note:   Bio notes: Fred Garwick was born in Alsace Lorraine, France, October 25, 1844, and after an illness of two months passed away at 6:30 o’clock Thursday evening, December 25, 1930, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Bast, of Chadwick, aged 86 years and two months. He was the fourth son of Jacob and Magdalena Garwick. When but seven years of age, he came to America with his parents. The family first took up their residence in the state of Pennsylvania. A short time later they came to Illinois, where he since resided.
On June 4, 1868, he was married to Miss Margaret Dietz. To this union were born four children, Charles, Mary, Magdalena, and Lillian.
He followed the occupation of farming, locating on a farm in Clyde Township. This was the home until 1895, when he retired and moved to Chadwick. It was here that his youngest daughter, Lillian Garwick Landis, died on December 5, 1908, and his wife Margaret on November 1, 1919. For the past 11 years he had made his home with his only surviving daughter, Mrs. [Magdalena] Wm. Bast, his eldest daughter, Mary Garwick Finnicum, passing away August 21, 1925.
When he was 40 years of age he was converted in the Christian church of Coleta, and united with that church at that time, where he has held his membership ever since. After moving to Chadwick and for 20 years he taught a Sunday school class and was a regular contributor and attendant at the Hope Evangelical church of Chadwick. He was loyal and steadfast in his faith unto the end when he “fell asleep in Jesus.”
Left to mourn him are his son, Charles Garwick of Sterling, his daughter, Mrs. William Bast of Chadwick, and one brother, Charles Garwick of Coleta, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
During the time of his recent illness he was tenderly cared for by his son-in-law, Wm. Bast, and the children. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 28, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bast, at 1:30 o’clock and at the Hope Evangelical church of Chadwick at 3:00 o’clock. Rev. F.W. Deutsche officiated. Music was furnished by the Messrs. Oscar and Elmer Rahn, Mrs. Lottie Rahn accompanist. Interment was made in the Chadwick cemetery.
