a. Note:   Bio notes: MABEL LILLIAN HARKEN 86, died of complications due to pneumonia on December 28, 2003 at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton. Born September 25, 1917, she was the third of seven children of Carl Anderson and Mabel Hay Anderson of Fort Dodge, Iowa. She graduated with a B.A. from Iowa State Teachers College in 1939 and with an M.A. in 1960 from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught mathematics at Armstrong High School in Armstrong, Iowa for two years before marrying Cecil Louis Cocking in 1941. They farmed in Manchester, Iowa and lived also in Washington, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. Returning to Iowa to farm, Cecil passed away after one year in August, 1950 at the height of the polio epidemic. Mabel returned to teaching in Aplington, Iowa where she married David Ubbe Harken in 1954. Mr. Harken died in 1960. Moving to the Chicago area to be near her siblings, Mabel taught business and was Dean of Girls in the Maine Township High Schools. She retired in 1978 first to Bradenton, FL and then to Delray Beach, FL. Mabel was a devoted mother and grandmother and a generous friend. She was a shining example of patience and endurance, sustained by her personal faith in God. She is survived by her son, John Cocking (Sandi) of Pensacola, FL; her daughter, Betty Barlow of Fairfax, VA; her son, Richard Cocking (Doris) of Boca Raton, FL; as well as three sisters: Ruth Davy, Anne Vogelsinger, and Florence Ballantyne, one brother, Bob Anderson; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Abbey Delray Center in Delray Beach at 3:00 PM on Friday, January 9. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Abbey Delray Wishing Well Fund, Boca Raton Interfaith in Action, or Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton.
