Notes
a. Note:   Bio notes: Waterloo Semi Weekly Courier, Waterloo, Iowa Tuesday, February 25, 1908, Page 8 John L. Dietz, whose span of life had covered a period of four score and five years, passed away last evening at 8:30 o’clock at the home of his son, Eli Dietz, 1202 West Second street. Mr. Dietz had been ill for more than a year, requiring considerable attention from members of the family and last Wednesday evening at about 11:30 o’clock he was stricken by paralysis, and from that time he never regained consciousness sufficiently to be able to recognize those gathered about him or to speak coherently. This aged gentleman had lived a long and useful life, serving in many private and civic capacities and his years were filled with good deeds and services well performed. In his early days he taught school in his native state of Pennsylvania, and in the west his occupation was that of farming. He gave his children excellent training and all of them surviving were an honor and help to him in his declining years. He was a steadfast member of the Christian church. The deceased was born in Somerset county, Pa., on Nov. 22, 1822. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary Ann Knight and they were the parents of 12 children, five of whom survive. The family came to Illinois in 1866 and located on a farm in Carroll county. This was the home until the year 1878 when they came to Hudson, again locating on a farm. Mr. Dietz, several years later disposed of his property near Hudson to good advantage, and moved to Grand View, S.D., in 1884, and followed the occupation of farming in the then sparsely settled community. It was here that his first wife and the mother of all his children died in 1885. Mr. Dietz returned to Pennsylvania and was again married to Mrs. Knupp, who died in 1904. Since that time he has made his home with his sons in Waterloo. The surviving children are Eli, 1202 West Second street; John F., west side member of the police force and residing at 108 Orr street; H.K. of Belmond; W.K. of Deep River, Ind., and Mrs. Maggie Garwick of Chadwick, Ill. Two sisters - Mrs. Lydia Humbert of Agency City, Ia., and Mrs. Lucy Phillippi of Fayette county, Pa.--also survive. Eli, who conducts a business at Barnard, Kan., arrived home this morning.
 Married 1891 to Lavina Knupp
