Notes
a. Note:   Stafford Courier: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hildebrand lock their home as they leave for Africa for their third tour as working missionaries. Ernest, a skilled carpenter, will be kept busy building schools and hospitals for the next two years. Mrs. Hildebrand manages to keep busy with teaching duties.

Newspaper clippings: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hildebrand of Stafford, Kans., who have arrived in the Comeroons, Africa, as our special misssionaries for a two-year period. Mr. Hildebrand is the missionary-builder in charge of extensive building projects at the Banso Hospital and on the new leper field. === STAFFORD -- Ernest Hildebrand, Western Kansas wheat farmer, is the Baptist church's handyman. He has made three trips to the British Cameroons in Africa for the Baptist Church.
He made his first trip in 1950 and supervised the building of two doctor's homes, two cottages for native male nurses. === "There is quite a difference between farming in Kansas and building a modern 74-bed hospital in the heart of Africa." So writes Ernest Hildebrand who with Mrs. Hildebrand lived on a farm north of Stafford for many years before the couple went to Africa as missionaries in 1950. ----------
Letter from Ernest and Augusta Hildebrand, written August 9, 1957 in Southern Cameroons, West Africa: "We've had to move about quite a lot this past year" ... "we are here at Banso" .. we hope to go to Belo in Sept. ... We want to get home the last part of April ...

Newspaper clippings about Ernest's working replica of the Advance steam tractor and threshing machine:
The Stafford County Historical Society made a new purchase....bought a one-of-a-kind handmade model of an Anvance threshing machine....The museum just recently acquired another piece of the past at the recent auction of the Ernest Hildebrand estate. A 5:1 scale model working replica of an antique steam tractor and threshing machine which was built entirely by hand by Mr. Hildebrand will be on permanent display at the museum....The museum was the highest bidder....paying $2,525.00 from local donations for the cause of keeping them in the state.
In a Courier interview a couple of years back Ernest explained about the steam engine and thresher. The following is an excerpt for that interview: "The steam tractor and threshing machine took the most hours of any project that I have worked on. I've got close to 1000 hours involved in the making of the tractor. I would start making parts and make one after another -- wheels, spokes, gears, etc. The threshing machine took about 250 hours of work. " ... "I made each part (one) at a time and would finally get around to assembling it. I built the tractor and the thresher in the 1950's and in building it I would either go from the actual steam engine measurements and divide by 5 or multiply pictures by 5. If we wanted a gear, we'd take the measurements off (the actual tractor) in decimals - not inches - because we had too much trouble with inches."
