Note: N422 He attended the second and third years of the class of 1854-58, and the second year of the class of 1855-59, at Marischal College, Aberdeen. In the 1860`s he travelled out to New Zealand and bought 29,000 acres near Napier, which he built up into a successful sheep run. He twice returned to Scotland, and on the second occasion married Anne Jane Barron (22 January 1871). They lived the next four years at Newton House near Elgin, and then moved out to New Zealand for the last time in September 1871. ------------------------------------------------------- OLRIG (by Richard Paxman) Olrig! The original Olrig is in Caithness, Scotland. It is a couple of miles south of Castleton, which is a few miles east of Thurso, on the north coast of the Scottish mainland. This is the property that James Smith bought in the 1790s from the Sinclairs, and his children, including Hector William Pope Smith, were all born there. (HWPS had a sister Williamina, who should not be confused with Wilhelmina Mary - HWPS's daughter!!) HWPS then went out to New Zealand, and bought land there. He had inherited quite a lot of money from his father, although his elder brother James inherited Olrig, Caithness. This property in New Zealand, he named Olrig Station, after his family home in Scotland. It is a few miles inland from Napier, which is on Hawkes Bay, on the east side of the north island of New Zealand. After a number of years, he felt he was able to leave the sheep station, and he sailed back to Scotland. (He kept a diary, which is one of our family's most prized possessions!). He married back in Scotland, and they lived there for several years, the three oldest children being born there. They then went back out to New Zealand, and the last two children (including "Mina") were born there. The descendants of two of HWPS's children still live on parts of the original sheep station he started. Other Olrig's have spread from the original property in Caithness. My great grandfather, James Hector B-S (Mina's eldest brother) named a property he owned in the south of England, Olrig. His son, my grandfather Colin Hector Brookes-Smith, built a cottage in Oxfordshire that he named Olrig Cottage, and my wife Diana and I had a 30 acre property in Aberdeenshire before we came out here to Australia, that we named Olrig Croft! --------------------------------------------------- 1841 Scotland Census: Olrig House, Caithness Parish: Olrig; ED: 3; Page: 1; Line: 780; Year: 1841, Parish 39 Smith James, Esq.
