He returned to New Zealand for a while where he was cadetted to a family in the Hawkes Bay region. He sold his share of his father`s property in 1906, and although most of that inheritancewas subsequently lost due to an unsound investment, his only ever occupation was - Gentleman! He married Ellen Brookes (daughter of William Brookes of Croft, Leicestershire and Anne Leech) and changed his name to BROOKES-SMITH.
