 On the death of his parents in New Zealand, he was taken back (before, but followed later by his brothers and sister) to Scotland, and brought up at Banniskirk House, which is a few miles from Olrig house in Caithness and was rented for them by their uncle, James Smith of Olrig. He returned to New Zealand for a while where he was cadetted to a family in the Hawkes Bay region.
       He sold his share of his father`s property in 1906, and although most of that inheritancewas subsequently lost due to an unsound investment, his only ever occupation was - Gentleman!  
       He married Ellen Brookes (daughter of William Brookes of Croft, Leicestershire and Anne Leech) and changed his name to BROOKES-SMITH.  He died as a result of crashing his motorcycle in 1952, at the age of 84!
