 kipo, N.Z., and Whanakino stn.,
 Hastings. Born: Elgin, Scotland,
 1870. Son of Hector William Pope
 and Anne Jane (nee Barron) Smith
 of Caithness and Aberdeen, Scot-
 land, respectively. His father
 arrived in N.Z., 14th Mar., 1858,
 and purchased Olrig station from
 the Government. Educated: The
 College, Inverness, and Royal Ag-
 ricultural College, Cirencester,
 Gloucester. Olrig, originally 28,000
 acres, was subdivided, each of four
 brothers taking a share. Two
 brothers went to Eng. and Hector
 J. and Charles A. Smith formed a
 partnership which, on being dis-
 solved at a later date, Hector J.
 Smith named his property Whan-
 akino, which is situated on the
 Ngaruroro river, where he speci-
 alizes in Romney Marsh sheep.
 Married: 1899, Gertrude, d. of Wm.
 Nelson, who arrived in N.Z. by the
 ship Devonshire; served in the
 Maori war; pioneer sheep farmer;
 Founder of Nelson`s Ltd.  Issue;
 One son-Ian, educated Wanganui
 Collegiate School and Christchurch
 University; Cadet at Whanakino;
