Note: (Research):The Standard, Cornwall, ON, April 6, 1916 Obituary of CHARLES WESTLEY CRAIG Born July 17, 1835 and died April 1, 1916 One of the old and much respected citizens of this place passed away on Saturday, April 1 at his residence, Summerstown, in the person of Charles W. Craig. Deceased was 81 years old and until about 35 years ago lived at his old homestead at Glen Walter. During the past 35 years he lived at his late residence, Summerstown, where he died. The late Mr. Craig was one of those early California pioneers, who left home in the dangerous times when Indians roamed the western plains. He took an active part in public affairs, being a member of the Township Council for over 8 years. He also took a keen interest in church work, being one of the founders of Salem Church, when it was difficult to say whether there would be regular services on Sunday, or a mission field. It meant hard work for the leaders at that time to erect a church and manse that is today a credit to those who stood by the work when it looked almost an impossibility Deceased was a manager and elder of "Salem Church" from its beginning, being Representative elder for a number of years. He was a man who always tried to help his neighbours when in trouble, one whom many came to for counsel. He took a prominent part in all public affairs and in politics was a Conservative. His wife died on February 6, 1895. Deceased was the eldest son of the late John Craig of Glen Walter. He leaves to mourn his loss, three sons and one daughter. Thornton Charles Craig of Manchester, Ontario County, New York, Thomas Ross Craig of Martintown, Hugh Arthur Craig on the homestead and Mrs. John (Flora Jane) Monroe of Lancaster. The funeral took place on Tuesday, April 4 from his late residence to Salem Church and cemetery, services being conducted in the church, Rev. A. Thompson Officiating. The pallbearers were Capt. Baker, D. Cattanach, W. J. Holdsworth, George Annand, Alex Gadbois and John Adams. Floral offerings were sent by the following - spray from Mr. & Mrs. H. McLaren, cross from Mr. & Mrs. R. J. Craig, wreath from Mr. & Mrs. H. A. Craig. A large number of friend and relatives from a distance were present at the funeral, which was one of the largest seen in this section for some years. The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends. NOTE The newspaper obituary has Thornton C. Craig as living in Manchester, N.H. which would likely be New Hampshire. On the 1930 U.S.A. Census, they are living in Manchester, Ontario County, New York which I believe is more accurate. I have changed the obituary accordingly and added the children's full names.
