Note: d just hung. She was a lot of fun and we played cards, usually hearts. She would come east on the train (she had a special pass where she could ride free because of Art's death on the railroad) and take Rita to Ohio for the summer. [refer to notes under Wilbur for more info on summer activities.] John, the oldest, was already married to Evelyn and had two children, Bobby and ______________. I usually would sleep in their apartment over the garage. One summer, soon after we had gotten our dog, Cookie, I became homesick and Mae had to bring me back early because I would just cry and cry. Art's accidental death was the result of a boiler explosion on the train and the story goes that he pushed the other engineer off of the train to save himself but did not have time to jump himself and so was killed. All four of Art and Mae's sons served in World War II and Rita recalls the banner with four stars that hung in the windows. Alton (or was it Allen but it was the one who married Trudi because I didn't like her particularly since I really had a "crush" on Alton or Allen). He was my favorite because he played the piano and would play polkas and other fast pieces and was so handsome.
