Notes
a. Note:   Note from Norm Bleicher: I was always under the impression that my mother had 2 sisters who predeceased her. Perhaps it’s my senility and I’m imagining it, but we always marveled at the parallels in her family and mine that the youngest was the only girl. My mother protested that was not the case as I recall.
  32/1880
It happened in the town of Lipsko on July 16th/28th, 1880, at 8 a.m.
It appeared Abram Szerman, tailor, 50 years old, resident of the town Lipsko, accompanied by the witnesses Gerszek Wajsfeld, member of the Lipsko Kahal, 39 years old, and Szoel Goldman, trader, 36 years old, both residents of the town Lipsko, and showed us a child of a male gender announcing that he had been born in the town Lipsko on July 9th/21st, current year, at 9 p.m., as a son of his lawful wife Frajda nee Bursztyn, 30 years old. The child at the ceremony of circumcision was given the name Icek. This document was read to the client and the witnesses and signed. Father illiterate.

In my experience most instances of Isaac/Yitzchak are listed in the Polish records as Ick/Jck or Idzk/Jdzk.
Here's a tip if you're trying to find a record in JRI-Poland for a relative with the given name Isaac or Yitzchak. There are multiple spellings in the records. The corresponding name in Polish is often spelled Icek or Iciek, but sometimes it is rendered Jciek. The D-M "sounds like" searches yield different results when you look for records with given names sounding like Iciek and Jciek. You'll want to search for both!
In 1930 census listed as owning a house at 5424 South 24th Street in Omaha with a value of $7,000
Jewish Gen lists Icek Szerman Born 1880 to Abram and Frajda Akt 32
Regarding Isaac's Family residence in Memphis, 1914 - 1917. Sondra Sherman Ettlinger found the following reference in the R.L. Polk & Co's 1915 Directory on Micro Fiche in the Memphis, Tennessee Library.
Sherman, Jacob baker Mrs. Becky Campole bds 399 Linden Av. While the Given Name is listed as Jacob, he is a baker and Rebecca Campol Sherman, his wife at the time is obviously referenced.
In 1916, Isaac Sherman is listed at 874 N. Manassas. I found an Isaac Sherman who died 11/8/1937 at age 72 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in a book listing Memphis, Tennessee deaths. I thought perhaps this Isaac Sherman was the one living at 874 N. Manassas. However, further investigation proved that the Issac Sherman who died 11/8/1937 was living in Oklahoma in 1910 and also in 1920, so it is unlikely that the one listed in Memphis deaths was actually in Memphis in 1916. Thus, it is highly likely that the 1916 reference is to my Grandfather Isaac Sherman.
  Memphis, 6/17/2009
Spent a couple of hours at the library looking at micro fiche of City Directories for 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917. No easy task since micro fiche viewers are in terrible condition.
Found no mention of any Volman during those yearts.
U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service application dated 4/15/1924 (see media) shows his application was denied because "examination of the immigration records at the port at which you state you entered the United States fails to show a record of your arrival on the vessel and on the date given in your requst for a certificate of arrival" This was probably because the name on the arrival manifest was Scherman and Rebecca was listed as "Sadie Scherman". As I have gathered more records, I have noted that there are many name and date discrepancies. Either the family was not being understood by those asking the questions, or (more likely) they were afraid of the authorities and were vague or incorrect in their responses.
Synopsis of Research by Sondra S. Ettlinger: Isaac Sherman and his wife Rebecca were living in Lipsko, Radom Gubernia, Kielce Province in 1910. At that time the country was Russia but both before and after that time it was Poland. Times were hard, and Isaac and his wife Rebecca had four boys. The children were Hyman age 9, Boruch age 4, Pesach (Pro) age 3, and Abraham (Charles) age 9 months. While the area was at relative peace and Jews were not being persecuted at that time, Isaac found it difficult to make a living. We do not know if he was a baker in Lipsko or if he was working as a tailor. What we do know is that there were many bakers and tailors and finding work was difficult. We do not know specifically what motivated him to leave, but it is likely that the Icek Scherman listed on the ship manifest for the S.S. Cartheginian which landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 17 June 1910 was my Grandfather.
Information on both ancestors and descendents for Isaac and Rebecca Sherman has been sketchy at best. Other than those of us who were old enough to have known them, there seems to be little information about them. I know of no family bible or written documents that they kept which would help us identify any family members left behind in Poland/Russia.
Leslie Sherman Kaplan interviewed her Grandfather Pro Sherman and reported that the Sherman family left Ostrov Poland because of the pogroms. Grandpa Sherman (Issac) most likely immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1910. To date, this has not been verified. However, a thorough search of immigration records for both Canada and the U.S. show only one I. Sherman immigrating during that time period. His name is reported as Isadore Sherman. I did find an Isaac Sherman listed as a lodger (occupation baker) in the 1911 Canadian census, but there was no Isadore listed. Based on other discrepancies (to follow) I believe the Sherman family was not wholly accurate in their reporting to authorities, or the census takers and others just got the information wrong.
Leslie reports that Aunt Cel (Hyman's wife) told her that Isaac had a bakery in Poland, worked in a bakery in Toronto, had his own bakery in Memphis that went bust, worked for a bakery in Des Moines, and finally owned his own bakery, the Sherman Bakery in Omaha, Nebraska. I have found information regarding the bakery connection in Des Moines, Iowa and I personally remember the Sherman Bakery in Omaha. Grandpa made wonderful cream puff horns (my favorite) light as a feather outside and wonderful cream inside.
In researching the family, I had two open questions regarding the births of Sam and Max which I hoped to resolve. It now appears that neither their births, nor Boruch's death were ever registered and records just may not exist. Considering that they were certainly not people of means, it is not inconsistent with reality that both boys were born at home, and that Grandma was most likely aided by a midwife who may not have registered the events. It is probable that Boruch died in Toronto since he is not listed on the border crossing with the rest of the family. He is most likely buried in an unmarked grave. We saw many of these in both places for children whose parents were too poor to afford a grave marker.
Searches in Memphis, Detroit, and Toronto:
I thoroughly searched Memphis directories to verify the families' sojourn there. I found an odd entry in the 1915 R. L. Polk Directory "Sherman, Jacob baker Mrs. Becky Campole bds 399 Linden av". Again, a name discrepancy. A baker named Jacob not Isaac, and someone with Grandma Sherman's maiden name! Isaac Sherman was listed in the 1916 R.L. Polk Directory.
In Memphis, I found most of the gravestones for family members I had identified. All of these were photographed and have been added to the Family Database I maintain.
Grandma Sherman's sister Freda had six children. Through email and the web, I have identified some of their descendents. Her Great Grandson, Jack S. Cooperman, Grandson of Sarah Volman was identified to us by one of the volunteers working at the synagogue we visited and she told us he was the new head of the Kosher meat department at the new Kroger. We went over to the store and met him, and met with him later in the day at his home. He provided names and dates for his branch. He is orthodox and shomer shabbos. Sarah Volman's son Jack Tanner is living in St. Louis, and I have contact information for him from Jack Cooperman.
I spent some time at the library and gleaned a number of obituary reports from old newspaper microfiche. All of this data has been entered into the database.
We also stopped in at the Abraham Joseph Schwab Dry Goods Store on Beale street and talked with our Second Cousin once removed, Elliott Schwab. Abraham Joseph married our Second Cousin Gertrude Volman, a Granddaughter of Grandma Sherman's sister Freda. The Schwab store is a Memphis landmark, and Elliott with his older sister Beverly now runs it. Abraham Joseph Schwab was very interested in genealogy and his hand written two sided tree has circulated widely throughout the family. I have entered all of the names on both sides of the sheet in my database, and over time have found many of the dates and places that go with the entries.
In Detroit, we again spent time at the Cemetery identifying family grave stones and photographing them. It was there that we had our biggest success. Grandpa Sherman's brother Morris settled in Detroit and spent the remainder of his life there. I was able to find his obituary. Tom and I spent several hours at the County Court House looking through large, heavy record books of marriage indexes. We wanted to find marriage dates for Morris and Sarah's two daughters Rebecca and Esther. Once we found the records in the indexed books, we were able to obtain photocopies of the records we wanted. Rebecca's was missing, but the index gave enough information to be useful. Esther and Earl were married by a Justice of the Peace according to the record, so presumably they had a Jewish wedding that was not recorded.
I was greatly aided by Linda at Hebrew Memorial Mortuary who had faxed me copies of burial records for Morris, Sarah, Esther, Earl, and Jeanette Sherman (Albert's wife) . Linda could not share the information of who received Yartzeit notices with me for reasons of privacy. However, she volunteered to send letters to those descendents and ask them to contact me. In response to the letters, I heard from Loretta Littky, the wife of Robert Littky, (Grandson of Isaac Campol - Grandma Sherman's half brother) who lived most of her married life in Detroit, and has recently relocated to Madison, Wisconsin.
I also heard from both of Esther Ross' living children (she had four altogether), as well as Michael Ross' widow who lives in Denver. I now have email contacts for Esther's two sons Robert and Alan and I am gathering information from them. Robert's children (both college students) have a presence on Facebook and I am establishing a contact there. Evan Ross who attends the Boston Conservatory of Music has responded. I believe that both he and Micha Hauser who attends Tufts are both in Boston. They are third cousins, once removed.
In Toronto second cousin, Howard Bloom (another Grandson of Isaac Campol) helped us find tomb stones in the Lambton Cemetery. We would have been quite lost without his help since there did not appear to be any identifying markers in the cemetery and although I had a list of names and grave lot numbers, there would have been no way to find them without Howard. Howard and his wife Rhoda invited us to dinner one evening and we met two of their children and several Grandchildren. I photographed tombstones for my Great Uncle Jacob and his wife Tzeril (Cyril) Rothbloom.

  Dear Friends and Family,
We returned home last week, and I have now had time to digest most of the material I collected on the road. I have also collected new data that begins to make a clearer picture of Isaac and Rebecca Sherman who were the focus of the month long trip we have just concluded. We drove 4,600 miles, had many wonderful adventures, and even met some new cousins.
Sunie Levin sent me a copy of Isaac Sherman’s application for Naturalization, along with a letter from the U.S. Department of Labor stating that an examination of the immigration records at the port stated on the application failed to show a record of the families’ arrival in the U.S.
It contains the following “facts” along with my comments in brackets
His name is Isaac Sherman and he has never used another name. [There are different spellings for Sherman i.e. Szerman, Scherman and misinformation about his name can be found on census records and in city directories.]
The name on his steamship ticket was Isaac Sherman, or I. Sherman.
His present residence was 5424 South 24th Street, Omaha, Nebraska
 His occupation was Baker
He was born on April 15, 1879 at Lipsko, Radomskia, Poland, Russia
He came by train (Grand Trunk Railway) from Toronto to the U.S. on October, 1914 landing at Detroit, Michigan on October 1914. [See 2 part manifest attached to this email Line 25]
The person in the US he was coming to visit was Sam Vollman in Memphis, Tennessee. [Sam Volman was born 1909; more likely coming to visit Sol Volman who immigrated in 1914 to Memphis, Tennessee.]
The place in Canada where he landed when he came from Europe was Hallifax, Canada on June 1909 [I cannot find a manifest for any Sherman in 1909. I did find one in 1910 (attached). Furthermore on the attached border crossing, page 2 the record states he came through Halifax in 1910 aboard S.S. Uranium.
The place in Canada from which he entered the United states was Toronto, Canada
The date of his declaration (first paper) is January 14th, 1920.
Wife’s name is Rebecca Sherman born 3/5/1882 at Ostrov, Poland, Russia. [Ostrov and Ostroft listed below is most likely Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Poland
The date of their marriage was July 22, 1900
 Children:
Hyman Sherman born 4/12/1901 at Ostroft
Pro Sherman born July 1, 1907 at Ostroft
Abe Sherman born September 13, 1909 at Ostroft [Interesting that 9/13/1909 is listed. My father celebrated his birthday on August 19. On Grandma Sherman’s Ship Manifest my Father’s age (On September, 21, 1911) is listed as 11 months which would indicate that he was born in September of 1910. However, there was no fare for infants under the age of one year, and many very young children had their birthdays changed to comply with the no fare requirement.]
Sam Sherman born November 28, 1911 at Toronto, Canada [This date is not supported by the facts. Isaac came in 1909 or more likely 1910. Rebecca came in September 1911. It is more likely that Sam was born in 1912. Furthermore, his border crossing in 1914 shows him to be 2 years old (see attached)]
Frieda Sherman born October 7, 1921 at Omaha, Nebraska
Max Sherman born June 12, 1914 at Memphis, Tennessee [Again, the facts do not support this date. More likely he was born in 1915. The family emigrated together in October or November of 1914 and he was not with them]
Albert Sherman born June 25th 1916 at Des Moines, Iowa
The foreign country of which he is now a subject or citizen is Canada [He was most likely never a citizen of Canada.]
He has resided continuously in the United States since October, 1914
He has resided continuously in the State where he lives for five years and two months [The application was made January 14, 1920. He could not have been in Nebraska for five years and two months. He had been in the United States for about that period of time]
Witnesses were R.A. Bleicher & Co, Insurance and A.H. Erickson Four-Broker.
Note that Boruch (a child listed on Grandma Sherman’s ship manifest) is not mentioned among the children. We know that he was 4 years old when he came with Grandma Sherman to Toronto in 1911. We also know (from the 1914 Border Crossing) that he did not come with the family into the United States. We can surmise that he died in and was buried in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
I will make adjustments to the data in the family tree I maintain to include the most likely names, dates and places from the above material. Conflicts will continue to be documented, and we may never know the entire truth.
I have also gathered information on Morris Sherman (Isaac Sherman’s brother), Jacob Kampol (Rebecca Kampol Sherman’s brother), The half brother of Jeanette Rubin Sherman (Albert’s wife). I have discovered several 2nd cousins, and all of the descendents of Morris and Sarah Sherman. I have borrowed a copy of the Volman Family Group sheets and input all of that data into the Family Tree Maker data base.
I will send information on these developments soon. I will also be updating my family tree on Ancestry.Com.
